John, i do not know what settings on the camera you have direct control over but the settings ARE different. image one is set at ISO 100 and SPOT metering (which usually, but not always, means spot focus point)
image two is set at ISO 400 and PATTERN metering. This will average out the overall picture and as you have a dark background it will "burn out" the lighter areas.
double, triple and quadruple check your camera settings, if you are having no input and it is set to auto then the camera is "guessing" what image you want and, as in the latter image, guessing incorrectly.
hope that makes sense and helps.
steve
additional info: your camera has full auto mode and program auto mode; in the latter mode you can change the setting for metering and ISO.
my guess is this is where the problem lies. image one camera is in PROGRAM AUTO MODE, image two is in FULL AUTO MODE.

EXPOSURE
The L77 has a full auto mode, program auto, EPS (electronic picture stabilization) mode, and several scene modes. There are no manual exposure modes. In auto mode, the only settings that you can change are the timer mode (10 second, 2 second, double shot timer), flash mode (one of two choices), resolution and quality. If you switch to program auto mode, you get a bit more control. In addition to the previous settings, you can change the metering mode, drive mode (single, continuous, exposure bracketing, interval), ISO, white balance, and exposure compensation.
