Yeah, I ducked out from comics to chase girls too.

****************

See, it was never an either/ or thing for me. I managed to do both. I may have more successful at one than the other, but I had both goin' on.

" Nothing is quite so cool when you see how it's created on a daily basis ... "

That depends.....it seemed to have made quite an impression on JRjr and the Kubert Brothers!

I have to say I haven't really run into "I don't read comics, I read graphic novels!" people.

I've been experiencing this as well, same demographic. Gaiman's SANDMAN seems to touch on what the girls like, without revealing them to be "comic book readers."

When you try to "expand" their knowledge with other suggestions, it's usually met with a lack of enthusiasm. They have no idea anything more exists beyond their chosen interest, SANDMAN in this case.

Well, I'm sure there are some guys out there that only use the term "graphic novel".

When SANDMAN was being published I ran into dozens of people reading it that said they "don't read comics."

********

My friend in college used to recommend the most random stuff to me.
I told him I really like Sandman and the next thing he tried to turn me
onto to was Wolverine, which was like the complete opposite of
Sandman. I'd politely read an issue of whatever he handed me but
most of it was complete shit to me.

It's like finding out someone is a fan of Citizen Kane and saying "you
know what you'd love: Weekend At Bernies.

Robert Walsh: I think he could have at least suggested other Vertigo titles...

I know there's a lot of crossover between Sandman fans and super-
hero fans but if you're dealing with someone with no particular interest
in superheroes then there really wasn't a whole lot back then to
recommend (if my friend's taste in comics was representative of what
the industry offered). He got me to enjoy Watchmen, Next Men, and
Dark Knight Returns but that was pretty much the extent of superhero
stuff I liked. The superhero scene really wasn't my bag.
