See again opinion. I think and have always thought that Savage Dragon was crap of the highest order. Artistically horrendous and just plain stupid. My opinion of people who liked and even loved the book is that they were morons who had no idea what art was.

This is the point in the movie where the 11 other angry men get up from the table and turn away from the idiot who can't keep his dumb, offensive opinions to himself.

"Hey, does anybody remember when we used to have fun talking about comics. "

You mean this isn't fun for you?

If you'll allow me a slight drift. As a small business owner I have a
corporation. That way I can't be sued only my company. But if I had
partners in that company they too would be part of that lawsuit.

And that's where it all gets messy. This has been an issue. Don't forget--
several folks have gotten sued over the years and Image always ends up
getting dragged into it even though in most cases we were not, as a
company, aware of other founders' business dealings. The thing that
differentiates Image from most companies is that the partners are also competitors and that's made things uncomfortable as people have
chased after the same talent and tried to undermine other's efforts.

There's no shared money. Never has been. The only money I see if from
the books I work on. Which is why I always found it baffling when people
would say, "I don't want to work for Image because I don't want to make
Todd (or whoever) money." Since there's no shared money and comic
books all pitch in a flat fee, which supports the office and pays its
employees, none of us see a dime from the books we publish. That way
there's nothing to fight over.

That's pretty safe to assume. I can't imagine the circumstance which
would have the two of us working together in any capacity. I'm at a point
where I don't want to do anything outside of Image and John's made it
fairly clear that he has no interest in having anything to do with Image.

You're better off. We should both be doing our own stuff anyway. It was
fun to work on that one Spider-Woman comic book just to see what it
was like and I especially got a kick out of seeing John draw characters that
I designed when Superman crossed over with the Doom Patrol all those
years ago but that's as much as you're likely to get.

The dream is over, chum! But that's okay--there are still plenty of sunny
days ahead.

It sounds to me like the guys who formed Image did take some risk since they weren't given any money up front when they worked out their deal with Malibu. They had to work on their comics and wait until Malibu got paid from the distributors as each issue came out. Sounds like they went without paychecks for at least a few months there. I seem to recall Chris Claremont talking about that very thing when he wanted to do a book for Image.

On the other hand, wasn't the deal Legend had with Dark Horse different? As work was handed in, pages were paid for against royalties? Or was there a page rate and royalties?

This is the bestest longest thread we've had on COMICS in foreverest.

You've been here longer than I have... So I'll take your word for it.

You know what I find really "funny":

Some posters here are comic shop owners or online retailers/resellers of comics.  Matt Hawes, for instance, has his comic shop linked in his profile here at JBF.  Being new here, I'm clicking on regular poster's profiles, etc to find out stuff about them.

How dare retailers come into this thread, slam Eric Larsen, and then turn around and make money off the sales of his (and Image's) books.

ERIC LARSEN --- you should make sure that whatever comic shop is associated with www.comicsunlimited.biz is banned from purchasing any IMAGE related products, since the owner clearly just wants to slander you in a public/global forum.

Ian, if a comic shop was banned (which is impossible to do) from purchasing any Image books, that might hurt Image more then the retailer, since Image would be loosing sales. Remember, the company's make their money off of the retailers and the retailers make their money off of walk in customers. Also, just because a retailer orders a comic, doesn't mean that the retailer will actually be able to sell that comic.

God bless you (and JB, for that matter) or being in a position where you can work on the books you want to work on, but I would be remiss if I let this opportunity go by without mentioning that my favorite work of yours was that 12-issue Fantastic Four miniseries you did with Eric Stephenson and a host of artists.  Man, that was fun.  I completely get why you prefer to stick with your own stuff at this point in your career, but that was the best FF since ... well, since JB's run.

I think everybody is entitled to his opinion. And "banning" somebody because of it is just wrong. Aren't the states all about freedom of speech? What is it good if you get punished when you speak your mind.
And, and the end of the day, a salesman that bashes a product he sells only hurt himself.

I mean, the first issue of Trencher opened with the title character battling a villain called the Nasal Python, who fights with super strong nose hairs

------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------

I'd never even heard of Trencher before this thread, but reading this made me laugh. Sounds like the kind of comic I'd like to read!
