Right. It was hilarious and looked awesome. And I just can shake my head about it being canceled because the art wasn't what was expected. I suppose this wouldn't have happen at the "Image Comics" of today.

Well, it was sort of a matter of not getting what you thought you paid for. Keith Giffen had a very particular art style that was very well known and easily identified prior to TRENCHER. Seriously, you could spot a Keith Giffen page a mile away. Obviously, Image thought they were dealing with a known commodity. The fact that TRENCHER looked NOTHING like anything Giffen had done before probably made folks a little nervous.

Trencher was the first time I saw art by Keith Giffen, so you can imagine my surprise when I looked for some of his other stuff. For me, Keith Giffen's style is what he did on Trencher. All those hundres of other comics he did are the weird stuff.

I understand that, but it shouldn't be like that because what they got was great, too. If it had been crap and they didn't want the Image brand associated with that (or more of that, depending on who you ask). But it just was different. And, if Image worked back then how it works now, they did pay for nothing, really.

Nope.
And, just for the record, I'm not knocking Erik Larsen or Image by talking about how much I enjoyed Trencher. I have a lot of respect for Larsen and enjoyed much of what Image has put out even from day one. I hated a lot of it too, but that's just the way the world works.
I tend to look at Image Comics has nothing more than a comic book company. That is to say, I don't understand why some people seem to take the things they did or said so seriously or so much to heart. They publish comics.

True. I didn't mean "paid" literally. But yeah, as good as TRENCHER may or may not have been, it wasn't what they thought they were getting when they went into business with Kieth Giffen. They were making cuts and this weird thing that they couldn't identify with got the axe.

Very foolish. The last thing a fan should take into consideration is their comics. Behind the scenes politics we know nothing about, personalities of people we've never had so much as a beer with, that's what matters.
Who cares if Image publishes Age of Bronze or A Distant Soil? Those evil bastards dared unleash Youngblood on the world! Damn near 20 years ago it was! Curse them!

Trencher was my favorite title from Image along with The Maxx. While we're all stuck in the 90s. I would've liked Defiant Comics to last longer. I wasn't into Valiant at all, but Defiant was pretty entertaining to me. Especially Warriors of Plasm.

Donald,
Ambush Bug was a character that Giffen introduced as a comical foil for Superman in the early eighties. His main superpower is that he can teleport, complete with a Loony Toons style "POP!" every time he does it. Giffen later spun him off into several different miniseries and specials, most of which took place inside Ambush Bug's own very disturbed mind. I liked the character a lot. Those miniseries were weird, crazy, funny stuff, with lots of breaking the fourth wall and plenty of DC in-jokes. It was a little like JB's SHE-HULK but a lot more violent. Giffen was clearly having fun on those books. You might want to check them out. I'm sure you can find them cheap.

Weird Al isn't here. It's irrelevant information that doesn't change or affect
the point in any way. ("Oh, yeah--well Aritie Simek lettered the Incredible
Hulk #186-- so there!)

I'll check it out. I'm pretty sure my friend has some. He's certainly talked about them before.

It took me a few minutes to remember what Defiant was. Plasm was... ok. I still have those old comics. Are those worth anything now? (ha ha ha)
Valiant I never really liked. I heard great stuff, but I always thought the artwork was too ugly to get into.
