Trevor, Eric Lund's comment was about Rob Liefeld, who has taken pastiche to a whole new level. While Erik Larsen has indulged in pastiche over the years, it's safe to say that he hasn't abused the privilege to the extent that Liefeld has.

And make no mistake, the book is very, very good.

Once again, opinion stated as fact.

Ooops, sorry Eric.  Embarassingly poor reading and comprehension on my part.

I don't read any Liefeld comics - can't get past the artwork to see if they are any good - so I don't know what Rob's stories and characters are like.

Quite obviously an opinion, though.

Now that you mention it, I do think that Liefled's Fighting American kept the sheild, but it went from looking like Captain America's sheild minus the stripes to having some kind of eagle-motif emblem on it.

That's right--the shield remained but it could no longer be thrown.

It's pretty obvious that these were Captain America pages which were in the
works and Rob recycled. Jeph Loeb made an attempt to bring Fighting
American back to its humorous roots once the recycled pages were out of
the way.

It sure was, but it didn't stop Liefeld from trying to deny the charges at the time.

I can not and will not defend the actions of everybody who has worked at
Image Comics. We may have been a team--we may have worked together
but that doesn't mean individuals can't do or say things the others find
objectionable.

I never stated anything of the kind, Erik, did I?

I wonder how much of the acrimony that the comic book
fanbase hurls at Liefeld is based on the fact that -- at
some point -- it thought his books were good enough to
spend money on.

How many people here bought his books more than once before
realizing that the money was wasted?

I'm one of them anyhow. Won't do that again soon.

How do you buy a book and then realize it's crap? Sure, I can see where a really good artist might fool you into thinking there was a really good writer, too, until you read the book. But how the heck could anyone look at Liefeld's stuff and think they were going to get something good? Anyone over the age of 12, anyway.

Liefeld's success had almost nothing to do with whether the work was good or bad. Somehow he got picked as "hot" (perhaps Gareb Shamus had over-ordered some Liefeld books and needed to sell them), and the Speculators went nuts. If you resent being caught in that foolishness -- well, blame no one but yourselves.

Opinions do not carry an admonition warning that to disagree is a
"mistake".
