Paul Smith left UXM to do DOCTOR STRANGE because he didn't think he could (or maybe he didn't want) to keep up with a monthly schedule. DS was a bimonthly title and he was a big fan of the character, so he went there. I guess in a roundabout way he left the high profile gig for one that made him happier...

Paul Smith kicks ass.

He is a very good artist. I was very fond of those Roger Stern and Paul Smith issues.

I really enjoyed Leave it to Chance, the book Paul Smith did with James Robinson about a decade ago.  It's a shame that one didn't catch on.

In 1999? Was it for DC or Marvel?

Guys -- May I suggest a Paul Smith thread?

He's too good to be buried in this miasma!

That's not accurate, Brian.  From Paul's own mouth, Doctor Strange was the book he always wanted to do.  He didn't leave UXM because of any deadline issues; his main goal for doing the book was to earn enough to buy a motorcycle and drive cross-country, believe it or not.  At one point because of the royalties he was the highest-paid creator in comics.  After he felt he made enough and Doctor Strange was available, he chose to jump ship...but it wasn't because of deadlines.

I'm almost positive I remember reading he was tired of a monthly crunch as well as it being his love for the character. I'll see if I can't track that down.

And that's all the Smith love for this thread.

So again, Erik - and I'm starting to think you're dodging the question because you know you can't support the statement with hard facts - which Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and IDW books are selling less than Savage Dragon on a regular basis? Seriously, can you please give me an honest answer or at the very least have the decency to admit that you're incorrect in making such a statement? Because I'm looking at the numbers and I'm just not seeing it.

This is a response from, like 5 pages back, but i sleep at weird hours because of work. My apologies...

JB: I spend a great deal of my time on this website discussing where the Industry has gone wrong and what might or might not be done to "save" it.

++

Discussion is great JB, But maybe it's time to take action. As comicbook fans we have the power to express ourselves by not buying the books. Apparently, that doesn't work, if not a single book sold can't break $100,000. The parent companies don't seem to be worried enough to take action. Maybe someone or a group of people already established comic veterans can from the inside. Joe Q. got four books, and wound up with the company. Maybe a similar coup can be done.

----------

JB: If, in your book, defending myself when someone shows up here to attack me constitutes "bickering", then I'm afraid you're either going to have to learn to live with it, or perhaps turn your attention to the attacker, and ask why he would even bother to come here when he has his own forum (LINK) in which he can express all the ideas he likes.

++

I would never say that you don't have the right to defend yourself against your attackers, sometimes it's actually fun to watch as you pick them apart. I also realize that most, if not all, salvos that SEEM to be coming from your corner are coming from other members. They too are entitled to there opinions, but after 31 pages, the original discussion that started this thread, seems to somewhat be getting lost in the mist of a verbal donnybrook.

Lastly, Eric Lund, I dig your avatar.

Simon, I obviously can't answer your questions to Erik but I wondered what numbers you are looking at? I check out the sales and their rankings each month here, http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/1850.html and it's quite good at showing how books rank in terms of sales against each other.
