I thought WCA, She Hulk and Namor was some of the best books of their day if not of the modern era. Namor stands out to me as one of the best written books period, nevertheless that it was the best run that charcater had ever seen.

I am sure that the HOT new artist can get something like Spider-Man and that's great but take a nothing book and make it something...that's genius. Least in my book. I respect Erik for Savage Dragon even if I don't read it, sounds like a labor of love to me. But I am sorry...to try to ding JB for those three books is like saying "Hey you know you painted all over that ceiling right?"

James--

I never said they weren't good books. On an artistic level they certainly
started off looking stronger than his Superman stuff did by the end. My
point was NOT that they were lousy--my point was that the common
perception was that going from Superman to She-Hulk as a career move was
a step down. I preferred them to much of his Superman run.

I love Byrne's Superman. I don't understand why so many people seem to complain about it.

And i agree that it may have looked like a step down...but honestly. What is easier to do? Tell a Spider-Man story that will sell or tell a Defenders story that will sell? I understand it may look like a step down, but I think he should get serious points for even swinging at those pitches much less scoring on them.

I think JB's Superman is the best Superman, ever. In any case, after Superman and Action Comics there is no way to go but down. Even Batman, or FF or Spider-Man all come second to my mind.
I also think it's not in anyway a step down to chose to write and draw Avengers West Coast (starring basically the same crew in the last JB stint on the Avengers), write the Avengers, write and draw She-Hulk, write Iron-Man and write and draw Namor. It's a logical leap. I think it's a step up for those titles to have JB in the credits and I think it reflected in the sales as well. For Marvel, as well as for Byrne, it was a win-win scenario.

"I think JB's Superman is the best Superman, ever"

(cough)Curt Swan(cough) Kurt Schaffenberger(cough)Jose Luis Garcia Lopez(cough) Neal Adams(cough)

Top 5, I'll grant you.
Having seen JB's inks over Curt Swan, which I really liked, I think maybe I would have preferred if they'd kept Curt Swan on Action with JB writing and had him inked by JB, instead of the JB / Dick Giordano's assistant combo we got. Not meant as a slight on JB, but while there were maybe parts of Swan's work that weren't as dramatic or modern as "the new guys", he was still the best. And I think editorial should have worked harder to have found a plan that included him.

But hindsight is 20/20.

Then on the other hand, how the hell do you top re-booting Superman?
Is there anywhere else to go?

Careful Eric, -here- saying, "I preferred them to much of his Superman run.", can be like saying you like Bananas and everyone jumping on you for apparantly hating Apples!  ;-)

Knut, I wasn't talking just about the art, I meant the whole package, stories, art, direction, freshness, supporting cast etc.
We can discuss hours about the art and never reach a conclusion, even though I agree to the top 5 you mention (I still prefer JB to all the above fine gentlemen).

Darren, I think even Batman is a step down from rebooting the Superman mythos, writing a and drawing Superman #1 and at the same time Action Comics!

Rank Batman to any of the Marvel titles JB returned to Thanos? Above or below?

…this thread has become a bit of a pissing contest! How great would it be if 2 long standing industry veterans could discuss ways to help the industry and if the ideas were strong enough, take a bit of a leadership role to see them thru, instead of bickering about the past, and accomplishing nothing!

••

I spend a great deal of my time on this website discussing where the Industry has gone wrong and what might or might not be done to "save" it. If, in your book, defending myself when someone shows up here to attack me constitutes "bickering", then I'm afraid you're either going to have to learn to live with it, or perhaps turn your attention to the attacker, and ask why he would even bother to come here when he has his own forum (LINK) in which he can express all the ideas he likes.
