I think every creator who ever leaves a series while fans are still enjoying it is going to generate some negativity. There are people who never got over Jack Kirby leaving Marvel the first time, there are people who never got over John Byrne leaving X-Men/Fantastic Four/Superman/West Coast Avengers, and I'd bet that a fair amount of the negativity directed toward the Image founders comes from that same "You abandoned us!" feeling that fans develop.
I'm sure that each of the Image founders would have made loads of money if they'd stayed at Marvel on their respective titles, periodically canceling and relaunching books to get new #1 issues on the stands, but I give them credit for walking away from a sure thing and taking a shot at something different. I was bummed out at the time when John Byrne left his Marvel and DC books to work on Next Men, but for his sake and for the sake of his readers, I'm glad he gave the creator-owned thing a shot. There's at least some part of me that wishes that we were in the midst of celebrating 20 straight years of John Byrne on West Coast Avengers and 22 years of Todd McFarlane's Spider-Man, but I don't want to begrudge anyone changing gears and trying something new every once in a while.

Most of the negativity came because you had people like McFarlane bitching about how bad of a screwing Marvel gave him when he was making a fortune.
And then proceeded to screw the fans with late books that were of inferior quality.

Do you have any idea how many people thought "Name
Withheld" was me? I wrote so many letters to CBG I practically had a
weekly column, and in none of those letters was I the least bit shy
about sharing my opinions (much like in this Forum), yet that cowardly
piece of crap appeared (and multiple shame on Don and Maggie Thompson
for publishing it!) and just about everyone assumed I had written it.
Really? Hard to believe. I read that letter when it came out, and it never occurred to me that it might be JB. I figured out who it was pretty quickly (I initially thought McFarlane wrote it), but John Byrne? Pfft. C'mon.

Edit - I normally wouldn't split hairs on stuff like that, but I'm trying to put

Matt--
Defending my then-11-year-old-self, I would have loved seeing 22 years of David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane on Spider-Man. I burned out on the "adjectiveless" Spider-Man pretty quickly, but I still enjoy that initial run on Amazing Spider-Man.
