Work a little harder at missing the point next time, Robert. Plastic Man may have done the stretching gimmick like Reed, but Reed--as JB already noted--rarely did PM's gimmick of turning himnself into objects.

If you can show me a comic where Reed transforms himself into a pig, I'll eat it.

And you seem to be working pretty damn hard to miss my point.

What can Mr. Fantastic do that Plastic Man can't?  They seem to be the same basic power, only Mr. Fantastic does much less with it, even though, as Mr. Byrne points out, he did do similar things at first.

At best, it sounds like Plastic Man has much greater control over his stretching powers. But underneath it all, they both have stretching powers.

But even if we take the transforming power as separate from the stretching power. They still share the same stretching power. They still do exactly the same sort of things with that stretching power. They wrap themselves around bad guys. They trip bad guys. They blow up their hands to catch falling people. I've not seen a single thing Mr. Fanastic do with his powers that I didn't see Plastic Man do.

If you can produce one panel of Reed Richards doing something with his powers that Plastic Man can't do.... I'll eat it.

Funnily enough, Erik's Spider-man really set a preset for Bagley's style

How so?

In the sense that a lot of us said to ourselves, "Huh. This doesn't look very different from Larsen's Spidey."

I never thought that.  When Larsen took over for McFarlane, it was a jarring change to me.  When Bagley took over for Larsen, it was also a jarring change.  YMMV, but I never thought for a minute that Bagley looked like Larsen.  Perhaps that has to do with me being a fan of Bagley's before he took over, but outside of a few things here and there, I never thought that his work was so similar to Larsen's that it didn't look very different.

Curious, and just asking a question here, but when you say "a lot of us" do you really mean just you or did you hear a lot of people saying Bagley looked like Larsen?

Aside from the occasional mallet hand, the most odd shape I have seen Reed turn into was a sphere-shape or cup shape to catch team-mates. The list is endless for Plastic Man; he changes from a lamp, to a pig, a cartoony face all the way to Wonder Woman's brassier. Of course, Plastic Man is actually a regular guy with a vivid imagination and sense of humor which is reflected by his shapes, while egghead Reed is a nth-class intellect who considers his brain to be his primary ability, and stretching a very secondary trait that, when used, serves only practical applications.

Bagley doesn't resemble Larsen to me either.  Also, he was more than popular in his own right.  He was/is extremely popular as a Spider-Man artist.

I'm still wondering if Erik will address the situation behind what happened to the Image comics from Hilary Barta, Mike Grell, Larry Stroman, and others. I remember there being quite a stink at the time that a publisher supposedly championing creator's rights cancelled the titles those people worked on like it did.

I'm sure that sales might be cited as a factor in that matter, but let's face it, "Savage Dragon" would be cancelled at its present numbers if it were being published by any other major publisher. I'm not putting down the art or stories, but the comic survives basically as a high-profile vanity press book anymore.

Artists that can't handle a monthly title through their own admition and those still working under the pretense of "Growing Roses" should be removed from monthly titles.

Let them do one off's, annuals, covers or fill-ins, whatever but the monthly titles should be hitting deadlines, else, well, those who manage them are clearly failing to manage the output of the titles they are responsible for.

This way I can still see Adam Hughes' or Brian Bollands wonderful art, when and if they produce it but simirlarly I can pick up the next title of the comic I love...well I could, if they still produced it!

How mean-spirited does a thread have to become before it gets locked? I would say this one has outlived its usefulness.

You think this thread is mean-spirited? (cocks an eyebrow)
Man, rookie, you crack me up. (Spits out a big wad of chewed out tobacco).
Us guys, (points around the room) we're veterans of the Flame Wars. You know what it's like to pound your way through 30 pages of "Hitler was an atheist" against a barrage of christian apologetics?  Were you here for the "Bush is lying about our reasons for invading Iraq" threads? (looks down)
Didn't think so. Talk to me when you've got scars and war stories to go with them, Kid. Maybe then we'll tell you about "mean spirited".

I honestly don't want to see the thread closed because I'm waiting for another reply by Erik Larsen. A couple big names in the industry debating each other and some fans= win.

(calling the waitress over and ordering a round of beers for Al, Mike, and Matt, a blue colored drink with an umbrella for Jodi and a big ol' Pepsi with ice for Knut)
