Wildcats were the X-Men.

Gotta disagree with this one.

Wildcats were the X-Men.
One of them was the T-1000, and wasn't Youngblood, Teen
Titans.

Savage Dragon is the Hulk with a fin and is a police officer like the original
Human Torch
++++++++++++++++
That's how I think of the Savage Dragon.
I also think of Hawkeye as Robin Hood with no english accent, Giant-man is
Paul Bunyan with no ox but he's a scientist like Dr. Moreau, Iron Man is an
inventor like Tesla but a knight like Sir Galahad but can fly like a chicken.
I do see your point though Rick.

Other than green skin, the Savage Dragon bears no similiarity to the Hulk.
They're as similar to each other as the Martian Manhunter is to She-Hulk.

There was a big "stink" about Captain America especially, IIRC. That creative
team was doing a damn fine job.
Just terrible how Liefeld was treated on his return, wasn't it. You want
CAPTAIN AMERICA? Sure! Let us just fire the guys currently on the
title. . .
========================= As I understand it, (and this was from Bob Harras about 10 years ago) the Heroes Reborn contracts that Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld got were inked before the first issue of Waid and Garney's Cap run, saw print. 'Course it's seemed a little suspicious that Waid and Garney got about a years worth of work out before being forced off the title. But then again, it does take time to grow them roses.

Emp = Professor X crossed with Puck.
Spartan = Cyclopse crossed with the Vision
Warblade = Wolverine
Void = Phoenix
Zealot = ninja Psylocke
Voodoo = pre ninja Psylocke
Grifter = Gambit crossed with Wolverine
Maul = Sasquatch/Hulk/Giant Man amalgamation
So I guess they are not all complete X-Men ripoffs, just partly X-Men ripoffs.
As for other similarities between Savage Dragon and the Hulk, they both have super strength and are invulnerable.

and are green and are male and on the side of the angels. But, in the end,
a more accurate picture might be gotten if at some point, lo these many
years ago, someone asked himself "What if the Abomination was a
goodguy?"

Ron Garney and I used to chat a lot back in those days, and he was certainly
surprised when CAPTAIN AMERICA was taken from him. If this was
something in the works for a year, you'd think he might have been told.

I enjoyed the Waid & Garney run and were very happy to see them return.

It's possible that he really wasn't. I remember reading at the time that when Liefeld and Lee came aboard, one of their reasons for doing so was that they'd get to work with Bob Harras again (as EIC). The thing is, at the time the deal was signed, Harras didn't officially have the job yet, and Marvel was using several semi-EICs at the time (Mark Gruenwald being one of them on Captain America). It sounds like this deal went on behind closed doors with the higher-ups at Marvel, without the knowledge of the then-current creative teams. I could be getting the details entirely wrong, though, but that was the impression I had at the time.

That first run was my favorite title out at the time. I was glad to hear it when they got the title back, but it wasn't the same. It just seemed like both Mark and Ron were in a different place mentally when they came back. It was still good, it just seemed to be missing that spark that the first run had.
