In my experience, colorists don't get royalties at all unless they work for M*****.

•••

Unfortunately for colorists and letters -- whose jobs, I think we would all agree, are ever so slightly vital! -- can make no clear demonstration that their presence on a book affects the sales.

If you can't do a page a day, then you can't do this for a living. It's just that simple.

I'm probably being unfair, but I'd guess many of today's 'rose growers' smile and promise empahatically that the work will be done on time. A given editor, pleased to be working with said 'hot artist', smiles back and keeps his/her fingers crossed.

And so it goes...

A common failing -- one I experienced first hand in my early days -- is to take one's best day as one's typical day. Once, in my fan days, I did six pages, pencils/inks/lettering. And for a while I was convinced that meant I could do six pages a day. Until reality caught up with me.

Somewhat more recently, when working on the JLA arc I did a while back, I was penciling five and six pages per day, eight and nine panel pages, too. This time I was sane and experienced enough to know that was some kind of aberration (which to this day I am unable to explain!) so did not immediately call DC and ask for six monthly books.

These days, when I work out my schedule for the year, I base it on 5 days per week over ten months. That automatically builds in "down time", just in case.

How long did this last for you?  Did the fastness spill over onto anything other than JLA before you went back to more typical speeds?

Nope, it was just the JLA.

Those who want to check out how crappy pencils produced at such speed
are, as distinct from those that are "roses", can look
HERE.

Well, of course you could draw 5 or 6 pages a day if you never draw backgrounds, as with those pages!

Those JLA pages have stronger story-telling and dynamic layouts than anything by so-called 'hot' artists on their best day.

As Rick said, those JLA pages are indeed "ssssssssmokin'." I didn't have a
big problem with Jerry Ordway's inks on those issues, but i think Tom
Palmer would have done an excellent job embellishing those pencils!

ME: May I ask... why do you post on this site? I really am curious. I can't imagine you are a "fan" of JB. So... Why?

---------------

Erik Larsen: I come here because I am a fan of John Byrne's work. I've bought
numerous pages of his original art and nearly every comic book he's ever
drawn, starting with the second appearance of Rog 2000 in the back of
E-Man. I've followed his career for roughly 35 of my 46 years.
That doesn't mean we agree on everything.
I didn't sign up to argue. I realize that this is John's place and I do my best
to be courteous and respectful. You'll find posts from me in quite a few
threads discussing comics and John's work.
When somebody questions me or asks about things my company has
done--I tell them. When somebody accuses me of something, I make an
effort to set the record straight or at least explain how I see things.

---------------

Thanks for the answer, Erik! I meant no offense. I honestly was curious.

Also: Because I asked you that question, I was emailed this ridiculous message this morning (I cleaned it up a bit with X's)...

You should edit it out, Nathan. You're giving whatever 12 year old sent you this more attention than he deserves.

I remember the column about Kirby. It was clearly a hear felt farewell to one of the most respected authors of the industry.
