Creating a likeness without straying into caricature must be a very daunting task. You have a good handle on it, and I've been following your work since SPACE: 1999. Kirk in particular seems to be a real challenge.

Kirk in particular seems to be a real challenge. •• Kirk/Shatner had a kind of baby face that was really difficult. Even Paramount acknowledged this, when it came to approving likenesses in the comics. Not enough lines, the face looks blank. Too many lines, old. Tough balance. I have found that even when just tracing photos, it doesn't always work.

I'd always wondered. The old DC comic series between ST: TWOK and STIII suffered from that. SOmeof the Kirk sculpts have been bad enough to keep me from buying them.....that Command Chair pose is the right body language, but the face is not good.

Didn't you have a hand in the Alpha Flight figure series of figures years ago? I know it's not your favorite creation, but they DID give GREAT representations of the characters.

I bought the busts of McCoy, Scott and Spock that came out a while back, but held off on the Kirk until his absence just. . . GOT to me.

Maybe Chris Pine will be an easier nut to crack :) The NuTrek ongoing from IDW is VERY promising. Your ROMULAN, CREW, McCOY and GARY SEVEN books have, IMHO, been the pick of their basket though.
I'd love to see your take on DOCTOR WHO. I'm glad you appreciate the Eleventh Doctor and Co. The cast has been stellar, and it's been a great ride.

I have a soft spot for Filmation's ST:TAS (it came out when I was 11, and SO hungry for more Trek!), and the Mego figures got surprisingly good likenesses of the "Troika"....although Spock's ears were a LITTLE elfin, and Uhura was a little....well...*Cough-Cough* (BarbieDoll!!!!) *Cough-Cough*, but then, the task of capturing Nichelle Nichol's beauty in a doll would scare anybody!

I agree that the HC Kirk's face isn't particularly good, but it's about average for what's been done and is better than Diamond Select's 40th anniversary statue of Kirk that looked more like Jack Lord than William Shatner.
The rest of the HC Kirk is very nice (the command chair is pretty and Kirk's body and uniform is pretty good) making the overall piece pretty nice.
The Art Asylum action figures did about as good a job as I've seen with Kirk's face.
There's a new Kirk bust that's coming out (here's a link) that doesn't do too bad a job of Kirk's face.
