…Jason Garrick, Barrack Allen or whatever they called Barry…

••

The idiocy there is that "Jay" and "Barry" are both real names. Having had to explain to people more than once in my life that no, "John" is not short for "Jonathan", this is the kind of nonsense that has a particular annoyance factor for me!

I knew a guy once who's name was Bobby. Not Robert, not Bob, but Bobby, right there on his Birth Certificate.

And then there were friends of a friend who named their son William Liam. A lot of people didn't say anything, but a few of us heard it and looked at each-other like "Really? That's like naming a kid Jonathan John or Robert Bob or Joseph Joe." Not in the presence of the parents, of course.

As for Thaal Sinestro, it first appeared in the lead-up to Blackest Night, which led to a point where characters in the story all stood back and said "YOU have a first name?" I suppose I can accept it as one of those things that just never got mentioned before - it's not like they retconned he was Hal Jordan's real father or anything, they're just revealing a previous unknown fact that doesn't really change the character at all. Since other Lanterns from Korugar have first and last names, it even makes cultural sense.

The Kryptonian name thing bugs me a bit. Jor-El, Jax-Ur, Lara, Zod, Non, Ursa, Kal-El... everyone seems to have one name, or one hyphenated name. Then you get Kara Zor-El and it all goes out the window.

Yup. And I have known, over the years, a Ricky and a Tim. Full names of both.

But it DOESN'T make sense for anybody to be SURPRISED that Sinestro has a "first name", if others of his race have them!

If you knew somebody named Bob Smith, and for years that was all you knew him to be, and then one day you found out his middle name was David, would you be SURPRISED that he has a middle name?

This is the worst kind of comicbook-think.

how do you even pronounce "Thaal" -- is it one loooong "a" or is it two syllables "Tha-al"?  And are they british or american "a"s (like the british "glass" with an "ah" versus the american "glass" with the strong "a")?

Upcoming Gigan and Predator Revoltech figures.

Not really digging The Predator head sculpt, but there is a mask accessory to take into account.

I haven't been picking up the DC Ame-Comi figures, since I liked the Kotobukiya Bishoujo line better.  That changed today with the Jade figure:

I think it's because her eyes are closed that she came off a bit more cuter than the previous releases (which seem kinda creepy-looking to me).

As a follow-up to Dwayne's post, Kaiyodo's Sci-Fi Revoltech page has put up an article on all the features that the new Gigan figure has (but it's in Japanese):

http://tokusatsurevoltech.com/series023/

There are also articles to all the previously released SF Revoltech figures as well.
