I saw a recent interview - not entirely sure if it was a RECENT interview, or if I merely saw it RECENTLY - and he clearly was not well. Whatever flaws, I always seemed to find myself reading comics he was involved in, and enjoying them. For that alone, I am grateful.

I feel that some of the best Marvel runs of all time occurred during those first few years of Mister Shooter's stewardship as editor-in-chief. I had the fortune of meeting him at a con, and thanked him for helping to make my personal comic book "golden age" so special. I also asked him about the three issue Count Nefaria story he did with my favorite artist, Mister Byrne and his exact quote was "John Byrne drew the hell out of those issues", and I couldn't agree more.
My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and fans.

RIP Mr. Shooter. Had the opportunity to meet him twice at a small convention. He would sign everything for free, and set up an Hero Initiative jar for donations. He would bring a plethora of time capsule comic history in his numerous binders and portfolios. He shared many great stories and moments. The last time I saw him, but not meet or greet, was at Fan Expo Canada 2023. He was charging (rightfully so) $50 raw/$60 CGC for copies of Secret Wars #8 and anything else $35 raw/$45 CGC.He had a nice personality, and I was fortunate to had met him.

I have very mixed feelings about Jim Shooter. He oversaw my favourite period of Marvel - Byrne’s FF, Claremont’s X-Men, Simonson’s Thor. Epic comics had some incredible stuff going on - Dreadstar for example. He did innovative things with production He created Valiant, which I really enjoyed until he left, after which it went downhill really fast. He created Defiant, which was OK, but not as good as Valiant That’s one heck of a plus column.
But, he did Secret Wars, which I blame for a lot of the current state of Marvel, with its endless mega event mentality, he really kicked in the ‘alternative/multiple version of the character’ which has devalued no end of characters, and there are too many stories of his ‘today I think this’ attitude.
I’m going to remember the positives, because I think that ultimately, what he did for the industry as a whole, produced the best comics of my childhood, and those are the comics I keep going back to, even now.

He created or co-created a handful of my favorite villains: The Parasite. Mordru. The Fatal Five. The Dark Circle. At the age of 13.
Love him or loathe him, his influence on the field of comics cannot be denied.
My sincerest condolences to family and friends. To anyone who knew and loved him.
RIP.

Very sad news, another giant of comics gone.
The Legion I grew up with, and became a fan of, existed in large part thanks to Shooter. I also enjoyed Secret Wars, though not realising the unhappy trend it would unleash. From what I've gathered here on this forum, and even in obits today by Paul Levitz and Mark Waid, Shooter was a complicated person, but one who left his mark on comics. He will be remembered.

I remember him appearing on Saturday Morning TV here in the UK (either Saturday Superstore or Swap Shop), and it was the first time that I'd seen anyone other than Stan promoting Marvel over here.
He came in and certainly shook things up, but then seemed to just...go too far. I became fed up with those endless 'event' crossovers which have since become a staple.
He certainly left a mark on the industry - both positive and negative - but was overseeing things when comics were huge for me.
Respect.
