Something I’ve tried to avoid over the years is what I call “Central Casting Syndrome.” That’s where extraterrestrials are basically humans in (sometimes minimal) disguise. Ironically, of course, I’ve spent my whole career in “universes” where this was exactly the case. The Skulls, the Kree, the Shi’ar, DC’s Martians, Kryptonians, and, the big one, STAR TREK’s most prominent aliens. I’ve tried to create a diverse range of alien forms when the opportunity has presented itself, and even slipped in a few explanations of humanoid aliens. Think of Marinna, for instance. And I snuck in a suggestion that Kryptonians had human ancestry, but I think everyone missed that.
