What single superhero seems to have been left the most potent and intact
as we find him or her today? Reboots and retcons have had their say on
nearly every character I can think of. Everybody’s worse for wear.

But to whom has time been kindest?

My first answer: Captain America

Silver Surfer seems to have stayed in character through the years.

My first thought was Daredevil.  I don't quite think of Frank Miller's changes as a reboot or retcon, just filling in the blanks.

Though he has worn alternate costumes, DD looks the same today as when Wally Wood gave him his new all red costume in issue #7.  Foggy is still there and Karen comes in and out through the years (and both are in the very good TV show).

Hasn't Karen Page been dead for 25 years?

Apparently!

It was the 90's--I sort of ignore a lot of the 90's!  (Surprising to hear actually, since she's such a big part of the Netflix show and people were clamoring for her and Foggy to return in the Disney+ show.)  But only Mar-Vell and Uncle Ben stay dead--everybody else I expect to see again at some point!

I love DD and I love Born Again, but I feel Frank kind of went a step too far when he torched (literally) the Murdoch and Nelson law firm, had Matt disbarred and had the Kingpin find out his identity. That was altering some pretty fundamental elements.

I would say Captain America, also. J. Michael Straczynski just finished his 16 issue Captain America run and I would say that run was quite good, with a bit of a supernatural story line.

Considering that Karen Page died in the middle of a plot orchestrated by Mysterio, it doesn't take a genius to see a way to reverse that one.

I'd say that the years have been kind to Hawkeye, who has improved over the years and become more relevant. He was always my favourite Avenger, which comes as a surprise to many.

The Silver Surfer has also been fairly consistent.

DD is one of my favourites, I love the Miller stuff by Denny O'Neil did pretty well too. I did pick up an issue of DD a few years back that featured a sidekick (Blindspot?) which I thought was awful though.

Joe Simon was quoted as saying he always thought of CAPTAIN AMERICA as a horror book. The Cap I met in AVENGERS 4 had left most of that behind, so I’m not really comfortable with him in supernatural settings. (Yes, I know. Baron Blood.)

Once he got his own series (and an origin story), but the character who appeared in SILVER SURFER 1 and thereafter was quite different from Kirby’s version in FF.

I was thinking about this differently this morning when I remembered how
easily X-Men Elsewhen snapped the entire Marvel universe back into its
correct orbit.

In some ways, these characters are completely built from scratch in each
new issue (the pages are never “more” blank when any particular issue
begins- the art boards always have and always will be totally clean when
page 1 is conceived.) So if the will is there to get back on track, it can
always happen for any character on any given day.
