I can still see the pencils of the last panel being a close-up shot of Cyclops, instead. Even though your Cyclops always looks sweet, your instincts were correct - the cause-and-effect panel is much better!

Howard Mackie told me that when they were looking for shots to demonstrate powers in OHOTMU, they’d first check to see if I had ever drawn that character. Reason: I almost always included cause and effect in the same panel.

JB I would just like to say 'Thank You' for making Scott Scott again. He's always been my favorite X-Man and I hated the way he's been portrayed over the last 2 decades or so. THIS Cyclops is the person and leader he's supposed to be.
The grasp you have of these characters personalities is amazing.

Thanks. Scott was my favorite X-Man from day one, and, hard as it is to believe now, he was the favorite of many of the readers.

Fast forward twenty five years, and find a shift in fan attitudes (bad boys rule!) and a bit of clumsy scripting, and we suddenly had Scott transformed almost instantly into a "dick".

Leads to one of my long-standing rules: Do not blame the characters for being written badly.

Wolverine really is the stupidest X-Man. Just trying listening for once Logan!

Yeah.  Logan’s performance review won’t be terribly flattering after this adventure is over.  Provided they survive his blunders.

Seems Wolvie is due for some tough management from Cyclops.

Wolverine, before he mutated into a supercool ninja samauri, was very much a blunt instrument. And a very dangerous blunt instrument, at that. (Recall my dead Kitty scenario.)

As Shooter himself mutated, Logan’s homicidal maniac nature became less and less acceptable, and Chris began slipping in references to Wolverine’s “berserker rages”. Entirely contrary to the basic underpinnings of the character.

All of which adds to the many reasons I could never take this book to Marvel. Too many people have been drinking the kool-aid for too long.

Good heavens! I know ONE thing I'm thankful for today!

I also liked Wolverine's counter-solution to Scott's "White Knight" effort. Scott's using Cerebro to find Magneto... but Logan is taking the easy tack and just following the very obvious blood trail. Unless Magneto is so clever that he set up Wolverine by using MORE of his own blood as a trail.

Incidentally... you noted that the trigger Wolverine tripped was a red laser. Could Cyclops see that? Or is everything red to Scott, so that would have been invisible? I never recall any dedicated X-Men foe dressing in red that matches the ruby quartz goggles, but it could have been a smart idea. I believe Warhawk attacked the X-Men playing on their weaknesses... that sounds like a gig.

There have been fans who have sprained their brains wondering if Scott can see at all. After all, with those power beams constantly pushing out of his eyes, how does light get in?

(In a desperate effort to quiet such a fan I once suggested the beams emerge in rapid pulses, so fast they appear to be a continuous stream. Light sneaks thru in the microseconds the beam is “off”.)
