Richard, I can't answer for Mr. Byrne, of course, but I write some fan fiction; and personally, I enjoy writing the most when I start with an idea, and let it have its own life. If it follows a planned course, or if it leads to new exciting ideas... I hate to force a story.
Of course, Mr. Byrne is a professional, so he does it right.

Well it's clear that Mr.Byrne has decided to start with something totally different to the post-Byrne X-Men. Although some people have posted in other sites some comments about Mr.Byrne apparent "insistence" in using the same scenario of the Savage Land (used in his X-Men, in the Hidden Years and now).Maybe he decided to start with something classic/familiar to the readers as he did with Diablo when he started in the Fantastic Four or the Leader in Hulk.
The question may be in this alternate reality: What happens with the post-Dark Phoenix material still by Mr.Byrne? Some stories could be still posible (the Alpha Flight story? the Demon story with Kitty?) with some minor changers, while others could be totally ignored or greatly modified to work in this new scenario. All will totally depend on what direction Mr.Byrne wants to follow but we shouldn't worry because surely Mr.Byrne knows perfectly what direction works better.

Couldn’t help myself and had a go at colouring it today.

When have you seen jet exhaust that was darker than its surroundings?

Never thought about it till now. Would you still keep the exhaust black outline but make it just white instead of red?

The black outline is a way of making what's inside it look brighter -- which is completely defeated by filling that space with dark colors.

Meanwhile...A frustrating aspect of my trip to Toronto: thinking of a dozen things I wanted to tweak on these pages AND NOT BEING ABLE TO DO THEM!

I'm really digging your inks and coloring, Tony. The Cyclops panel has a Gene Colan vibe going on. Good stuff!
