A Note on this page: It would, of course, be "dark" underground, but rather than load up the panels with black ink, which might conflict with the black on Kitty's costume, I chose to leave this in the (hopefully) capable hands of the colorist!

Mr. Byrne, a tangent question for you about Kitty (and it may prove I'm too deep into the technical aspects...) In the third panel you inked, or whenever Kitty was "out of sight", how did she keep her sense of up and down? I'll assume that the Vision has a gyroscope that keeps him oriented... how about Kitty?
The thought that inspires this came from an episode of Mythbusters where the guys were blindfolded and then told to walk in a straight line, and couldn't... they kept "course correcting" until they were going in a circle. Thanks!

Gravity! Altho Kitty can, under the right circumstances, "walk on air", in her phase form she is just as subject to the pull of the Earth as anything else. (In the script for this page I have her noting that she cannot move upwards thru the dirt, so she must go down, in the hopes of finding a cave or tunnel before she runs out of air.)* * If we want to get really technical, we might wonder why the air in her lungs doesn't just drift away when she phases. Some part of whatever it is that keeps her clothing moving with her, I suppose!

Wunderbar! You bring to mind something that has been bubbling in the back of my brain as I worked on this project -- namely, Chris' habit of having Nightcrawler occasionally speak or exclaim in German ("Unglaubich!") which used to make me wonder if he was really getting the idioms right. Which further makes me wonder about skipping such things, here.

Beautiful. Your panel perspective of where the camera aims is always a highlight for me.

Curiously enough, I thought it came out vaguely Austinian, minus the broken lines.

For some reason I'm getting a bit of a George Pιrez vibe in those inks. Very nice.

I can see the Austin influence in the inks- very sweet!
Like many on the boards, I have an attachment/affection for your run on Uncanny X-Men ( and Superman, Next Men, JK4W and on and on), but I would not be honest if I didn't point out that your NEW stuff is so much better! It really is.
Not to knock any of your older stuff (of any vintage) but this stuff is everything that I love about your work but better: dynamic storytelling, character being in 'character' (body language, slight nuances), being drawn to the next panel (pacing?), I can 'read' the script without there being a script, etc.
I don't post very often so hopefully you don't mind my adding my sincere and genuine gushing praise to the props everyone has already given!

I LOVE the inked page! You are one of my favorite inkers, and my favorite on your pencils.
I'm clearly biased, but in the hypothetical of this as an ongoing, I can see wisdom in the idea of having the writing, penciling and inking all by John Byrne. It was, after all, his next creative step in "the original timeline."
Shortly after the original X-Men 137, John went off to write, pencil and ink the Fantastic Four.
This series would, one might say, imagine what if John stayed to do those chores on the X-Men instead?
