There is nothing to be overlooked. They are try out pages.

Daniel, Herbert continues to be one of my favorites.
Between the conversations and the pieces that he brings to
shows, the guy is tops.

Since tryout pages are an artist's way of showing an editor that he, the artist, understands the form in addition to being able to draw really well, NOTHING should be overlooked.

I'm not picking on the guy. I'm sure That now that he's a professional
artist, the editors schooled him on leaving space for copy right quick.
Just that one of the things that I enjoy about this site are JB's teachable
moments, making me notice things that I may never have before.
Those pages above provide a good example, that's all.

Vinny, he has been a professional artist for years and had
done a decent amount of work for the Big Two before
creating these pages. I'm not aware of try out pages that
have intentionally left open spaces for word balloons. I'm
not sure that there is a teachable moment here, since in
reading your original post, you actually talk yourself out
of the point that you made. Just seemed a bit odd to post
it at all, given the form the narrative took.

Sorry, Fred. I didn't mean to come off as if I was raining on
your parade. He's definitely got talent and those are nice
pages to own.

Jack Herbert is an incredible artist. I am regularly blown
away by his work. Seeing this piece in his portfolio at
Comic Con Experience, I was immediately drawn to the beauty
of it. The convention saw the debut of his first
sketchbook, but anyone going to his table after I did, was
not able to see the original artwork for the cover up
close. I snatched it up without hesitation and have
regularly marveled at it in the time since.

Here was a Logan piece that he had as well. He is a master
with copic markers.

Herbert is amazing. I've marveled at how copics have come
to be used and the skills that some can use them. I will
post the printed sketchbook cover, which is colored...
though I find myself more impressed with the original
piece.
