Personally, I'm on a mission to get the Ghost Rider bike that John drew many time produced! My first exposure to Ghost Rider was in the Daredevil story drawn by John and featuring that bike!

I'm VERY curious to see John's response to what color H.E.R.B.I.E. should be!

Personally Al I agree with you. I think that HERBIE should be white.
The way I've always seen it is that there were 3 basic kinds of metal in the MU.
You had chrome silver,.. that is like one's silver wear. IOW, reflective, shiny, almost like a mirror.  Characters like Silver Surfer had this look and it was represented in the comics as white with blue highlights.  I think HERBIE fits into that category.  IOW, Chrome.

then you had you nickel plated silver,..  more like the color of a nickel but still something smooth and reflective.  characters like Ultron had this color.  Not quite Chrome but still smooth. This was represented in the comics as gray with sometimes blue highlights, or that "shiny/ metallic" effect done in the art work itself.

Lastly you had the Iron or metal look.  This was more like forged iron.  Characters like Dr. Doom had this color. This was reflected in the comics as gray without too much of the metallic effect.

IMO, Herbie's color in the comics (white with blue highlights) represents the chrome look rather than the Grey depicted in the (btw FANTASTIC sculpt).  I would say either chrome it or make it white. Believe it or not I would prefer white in this case.

Silver, but not chrome. Like the Silver Surfer.

This is one of the principle problems with comicbook colors, of course. They don't really look like anything in the real world. Take our mascot, for instance.

When I built the 3D model of ROG-2000, (the one featured on our Lobby page) I rendered him in chrome, and it just looked WRONG. Didn't look like Rogie at all! Here's a shot I dummied up of him in my old studio:

So, eventually, I figured out that it would be better to use one of the fake reflective patterns that came with the modeler, rather than having him actually reflect his environment:

H.E.R.B.I.E. should be much the same -- but, unfortunately, that's not an option with a real world model. So, back to the Silver Surfer.

(Parenthetically -- I know I have said it before, but what a NIGHTMARE that Bowen site is! So many people using the QUOTE function they way they used to here, before we shut it down. GAH!!)

I'm embarrassing myself by admitting this, but it wasn't until "Rise of the Silver Surfer" that I realised the character was, you know, actually SILVER! The white with blue highlights look of the comic had made me blind to the possibility.

Don't feel too bad! Even STAN forgot what color the Surfer was, from time to time. I had a distinct "Huh?" moment, reading an issue of THE SILVER SURFER in which the character, in civilian garb, including a trenchcoat, hat and shades, is accosted on the subway by a punk who mocks him for his "spooky white face"!

Nothing new there, of course! That's how the Beast turned blue. When he switched from his original (expensive) gray, it was stated in the comic, in so many words, that his fur had turned BLACK -- but it got the default blue highlights, and it was not too long before writers started referring to his color as BLUE.

Not a fan of that bike! I only drew it because I was staying on model!

Hey John it's interesting how you make the distinction between chrome and silver.  ROG for me is what I would consider "chrome".  I guess chrome means different things to different people.
your model of ROG for example could be accurate IMO, (I can't see it close up so can't tell)... perhaps it looks off because of where it was. I think if you placed it in an environment that had a different background or had a lot of blue  around you might get closer to your digital mock up.
I've seen that a lot with chrome bumpers for example.
The appearance changes drastically depending on the weather, lighting or if its inside or outside
I've definitely seen things that look like your digital mock up. and always thought of it as "chrome".

Silver has a lustrous surface, while chrome is more of a mirror finish. Reflections are much more clearly defined in chrome than in silver. As I have noted from time to time, if the Silver Surfer was rendered as chrome, in space he would be practically invisible!

Just pre-ordered this. Oh man, I hope the production version is as good as the prototype!
