My main problem with that Thor statue -- in addition to those already mentioned -- is that it's just so darned mundane.  Kirby's Asgardian designs had the broad strokes of Norse flavor, but had a cosmic granduer.  This statue looks like a run of the mill sword-and-sworcery guy.  (And why, exactly, does Thor need armor?  Is Superman going to start wearing a flak jacket?)

More than likely Steve Rogers new outfit is temporary, part of a storyline.  As for why would Thor need armor... well, why would he need a cape? Or a helmet? Whether you like it or not is your right, but as to questioning why someone needs something as part of a costume or not is pointless. It there because the artist or writer wants it there because it looks cool. Pretty much the founding cause of all superhero outfits.

 edited for spelling.

I can't agree with the criticisms of the new Thor outfit. I
think it does a nice job of keeping the basic feel of the
original while adding a lot of "cool" fantasy touches to
the design. Of course I love the original, but this is
without question my favorite "alternate" Thor costume to
date.

Ok, how about this:

He's wearing armor because it looks cool! As does the solid disks and taller boots. But I'm sure that after a short period of time, the original look will return.

I will say that I prefer slight touches to classic
costumes--like how JB modified Wonder Womans bracelets,
which seems to be the accepted norm now. The one aspect
of Thor's original costume that I felt was the weakest
was those "NBA wristbands."

I do agree that superheroes should look like superheroes.
The new Thor outfit, probably because of the cape, still
looks "superhero" to me. I don't care much for how the
Iron Man comics seem to be going anime/sci-fi as of late.
I think we're currently seeing the influence of artists
who grew up watching/reading more anime and other sci-fi
stuff than superhero comics.

Finally decided I had to find space for this one…

…when I realized it's basically TAS Batgirl, just not in Bruce Timm's style.

What's really distinct about the armored version?

The only thing distinct about the current Thor costume is the elements they carried over from the original version: the helmet and the discs.
