Let's just remember one choice phrase that came up during the anti-communist hearings in the 1950s (not sure whether it was HUAC, McCarthy's or both):
"premature anti-fascist"
This was a term used to describe US liberals/communists who warned of the dangers of Hitler and Mussolini before the rest of country came around to share that view.
Premature. Anti. Fascist.
They were right, but the were right too soon. Gotta love the mindset wherein THAT's a problem. . .
I think one big concern with McCarthy's rhetoric is that he wasn't trying to get Communist spies out of government, but all Communists, or those with Communist leanings. The dialogue and mindset of the nation could not incorporate the idea of a non-disloyal Communist American. Thankfully there's a bit more nuance today. People may (quite rightly) have issues with Vermont Representative Bernie Sanders (Independent, former Socialist Mayor of Burlington). They may even consider him a whackjob. But what they don't do is assume he's funnelling secrets to Beijing.
(would a right-wing idealogue giving classified info to a fascist country be preferable?)
