With the melting of the polar ice caps, everyone is scrambling for a piece of the pie.  New shipping lanes are opening up (see the below image).  Over half the Arctic coastline belongs to Russia.  They are committed to  developing the region.  Russia has a large lead in icebreakers (57) over any other nation.  I don't believe the US can catch up (we now have five), especially if China enters the picture in a big way in support of their ally Russia.  Trump's ham-handed way of going for Greenland seems to have backfired.

(A side note: In 1868 the US almost purchased Greenland.  US Secretary of State Seward commissioned a report on purchasing Greenland (he was the man who negotiated Russia's sale of Alaska).  The US was going to purchase both Greenland and Iceland for $5.5 million in gold, but - for some reason - Seward never made the offer.  The subject has come up several times in our history, and frankly - looking at the history - I can see no reason why Denmark has any more claim on Greenland than the US does.)

Occupying the land counts for a lot. Lots of Danes, few Americans.

The U.S. also tried to buy Greenland from Denmark for $100 Million in 1946, and the offer was rejected.

Denmark has a bigger claim than the U.S. does, Brennan. Greenland was colony before it was incorporated into the Danish Empire, and last time I checked citizens of Greenland also hold Danish citizenship.

Why would they want to be part of the U.S.? Among other things they have much better healthcare and LGBTQ+ rights.

One need only look to Puerto Rico as to why Greenland and the Danes shouldn’t want to be part of the US.  Our handling of numerous natural disasters there has itself been a disaster.  They have some of the benefits of being part of the US, but no voting power to affect national US elections.  I know many don’t want that in Puerto Rico as they want to stay semi-independent, but they’re in a middle ground that is often not beneficial.  Also?  No way would Republicans want to make Greenland a state.  Much like Canada (again, ridiculous), they would swing heavily progressive and Democrat. Voting power in Congress and the Presidency would do Republicans no favors.

Authoritarians expand. Attacking the sovereignty of defenseless neighbors
is an early step to establish the thuggish strength of the strong man
stepping into the world stage.

Europe needs to give Trump a black eye now, because letting him have his
way or putting up a weak opposition will create the desired conditions
where Trump can continue his creeping corruption.

My research shows Danes make up 7% of Greenland’s population.

I could not find that.  Aside from military, not many would be my guess.

=========================

I never weighed in with my opinion on it Brian.  I only gave the strategic picture for the hullabaloo.  What is best for people isn't taken into account with things like this.  It is above that.  For example: I need a new car as mine was totaled last summer.  I want to buy a Toyota, Lexus, Acura or Mazda but with this 25% tariff I am feeling in limbo.  No one asked me about it.  Do you understand?

As far as the history goes, like I said, from my reading of history neither the US or Denmark have good claim on it.  Is that better?  I am not for empires taking land away from people.  I wasn't for it in Canada, or the US, or Africa, or China and I am not for it now.

Exactly, textbook definition.

Also I might add that none of this BS is something Trump had especially strong feelings about before, or on his first presidency.

There are other forces at work here.
