Well, let’s not keep them waiting, JB. Let’s push up that release date.

Is that something you actually have a say in?

Now, this is in NO way a binding statement, but I listened to a podcast with Chris Ryall, and he mentioned that there were logistical hurdles in getting Volume 1 out which should not be there for Volumes 2 and 3, so it's not impossible that the next volume could arrive earlier than 1 year later*
*Remember that the original ship date was April, so if anything, maybe Volume 2 could get back to that schedule?

Abrams is making the decision based upon whatever arcane forces rule real world publishing. I am sure that they would love to make more money sooner, so they must have a good reason if they’re choosing not to!

As I look at various comments about ELSEWHEN online, I am struck again and again by the nimber of people complaining that the first volume “ends on a cliffhanger.”Okay, there’s not a LOT of people seemingly upset by this, but just enough that I wonder how many are unfamiliar with the concept of a TRILOGY. Because that’s what this project really is. A collection of adventures told over three volumes. (Originally 32 imaginary “issues” with no complaints about cliffhangers.) I look back on other trilogies we’ve seen over the decades. THE LORD OF THE RINGS (actually six books in three volumes), Asimov’s FOUNDATION, the original STAR WARS, BACK TO THE FUTURE. I’m not directly comparing my work to those others. But what ELSEWHEN has in common with them is its episodic nature. Those other works had plenty of cliffhangers (“Frodo was alive, but taken by the Enemy.”) and no one got upset. That there was more to come was understood. Would it have worked better for some if ELSEWHEN 1 had been announced not as a “graphic novel” but as what it is: the first volume of a TRILOGY?

For some...? Probably.
That said, those that are looking for issues with it are always going to find an issue.... or create one.

In regards to the Fellowship of the Ring, I recall when Peter Jackson's first film came out, there were people coming out of the theater upset that it ended on a cliffhanger. I recall telling some that there were three books, and as a result, three movies total. When I told them the next one comes out the next year, they bitched and walked off.
Modern audiences.

Nah. There is always some vocal segment that will find something to bitch about.

Just realized, with Vol. 1 doing 45,000+ in sales and preorders, we’ve already hit close to two thirds of the advance Abrams paid me for all three volumes. Yikes!!!!

I'm not surprised, with more recent comic readers conditioned from the past 20 years of "writing for the trade". I guess some of those folks were expecting everything in the first volume to be all nice and buttoned up by the end.
