What I appreciated most about this series, above and beyond the obvious (but we wouldn't be here if it weren't for the obvious - - fans of his art/writing making for great storytelling) is that the project stands on its own without having to necessarily refer to the original material. It's a fun read, independently.
What a wonderful project this was, I really enjoyed this and I will miss it terribly. Thank you for putting this together. The storyline was well done and I loved seeing the Fantastic Four show up a couple of times.
For me, it really was seeing Cyclops BE Cyclops. Scott is the captain America of the X-Men, or rather, he should be. By all means have Wolverine call him a dick on screen, but don't have him ACTUALLY be a dick - either on screen or in the comics. He's a planner, he's a strategist, he's stoic, he's a leader. he understands the power of his beam if he lets loose. And he is brought out of his shell by Jean, the ONLY woman he loves. Whichever Skrull shacked up with Emma Frost should have been exposed during Secret Invasion, but I guess they managed to stay hidden even after that.
Cyclops quickly became a favorite character of mine after my first couple of issues of UXM, somewhere in the 129-131 range. Fast forward several years to this forum and one of my commission wishes was my three all-time favorite characters- Captain America, Reed Richards, and Cyclops. Something about those team leaders struck a nerve for me.
My thing with Claremont is the way he basically got rid of all the X-Men I grew up reading about.
Banshee was already gone when I started reading. Jean dies and Cyclops is gone. Then Cyclops comes back. Rogue comes in then Cyclops is gone seemingly for good. Then Colossus, Kitty and Nightcrawler are gone leaving just Storm and Wolverine from the team he started with. Then Colossus came back. And it would remain the three of them until the big franchise reboot. So what did he have against the team that he got rid of them? Was EXCALIBUR a way of just getting Kurt and Kitty out?
Those last few pages are fantastic... what a cliffhanger!!
Thanks for a terrific run on X-MEN.ELSEWHEN, JB - I never imagined seeing these characters drawn AND written by you - and you knocked it out of the park. Especially appreciated your Wolverine origin... as I was never happy with the published version.
