One of my all time favorite Doom moments, written by Archie Goodwin. A desperate Sue has sought out Doom for help. . . .

(Significant to note this was done in the days before the ever incestuous fan mindset demanded that everything be TOUCHING everything else. When titles were allowed to exist as if they were the only ones, and not have to worry--as so many did in retrospect--where the Avengers were when Galactus attacked the first time.)

That page looks like Buscema drew it in his sleep—and it’s still several factors better than anything I could do!

GAH!!!!!

Gotta say, JB.... I never grow tired of you writing & drawing Doom.

In an alternate reality, I could see a miniseries done by you, similar to SUPER VILLAIN TEAM-UP.

Big John is a legend, but nothing touches a Byrne Doom in my book other than Kirby. Today's page is a great example of why.

I met John Buscema once and it saddened me to hear that he claimed to not enjoy drawing comics… He said he didn’t like doing superheroes and that Conan was the most tolerable ( Of course it’s possible he was messing with us at the time.)  I remember asking him what he would prefer to do and he said painting.

Did you know him at all JB?

Tho I met John Buscema only once, and that briefly, I do have a John Buscema story, relayed by Ralph Macchio.

First, a bit of set-up.

There is a popular misconception that most of the projects I’ve worked on I did “for the money”. Not so. As I’ve pointed out many a time, there’s a lot of difference between expecting to be paid for one’s labors and doing it for the money.

When I signed up for Superman the rumor immediately blazed thru fandom that I was doing it for the money. No, I said. In fact, given the disparity between Marvel and DC I actually expected to make less doing Superman than I was making on FANTASTIC FOUR.

So, Ralph’s story:

Big John stuck his head in Ralph’s office. “Is it true Byrne says he expects to make LESS money working on Superman?”

Ralph said “Yes.”

Buscema paused. “Schmuck.”

:-)

I echo the sentiments of those who say JB does Doom better than anyone.

I wonder if Doom's response to Magneto would have also
worked as thought balloons.

The look that Doom shoots Magneto in the bottom left panel is beautifully done. Almost comedic in a way.

Poor Kurt, twice now taken prisoner for nefarious ends - plus had his partner fried. Give a guy a break! ;-)
