It is possible that the Phoenix doesn't really understand human fashion. I mean, you're a cosmic entity, you spend your time flying from star to star (destroying a few, presumably)... are you really worried about things like what your host body usually wears? ;)

I drew a scene where Jean pirouettes across the floor, changing her outfit with each turn, so at least part of her mind has a “fashion sense”.

I can't help but feel a little bad for Dr. and Mrs. Grey (and think back to the latter's anger, several issues back). Their lives have been awfully hectic since they first reached out to that highly exclusive school in Westchester...

It was Xavier who reached out to Jean. According to the first issue, he contacted Jean and invited her to join the School, telling her she should let only her parents know. From that point, they got off easy—until Dark Phoenix!
