Gooood job JB (Kitty's face in today's last panel is
priceless) !!!
I hadn't the opportunity to wonder where this Alienlike
monster came, way back in '81, as this 143 issue was
(fully) censored in France !!! But it definitely didn't
come down the chimney !!!

Well, we had kind of a Code here too in the late 60's.
Both first french magazines gathering 3 to 4
(translated) Marvel comics (Fantask then Marvel) had
to be cancelled after a few issues because Jack
Kirby's Thing (first issues) was considered
frightening for children...then colors (!) too violent
(sic) etc...
Strange (the new magazine) and the further ones (Nova,
Titans...) managed to survive but with heavy "fix" on
blood, hits...full panel cancelled or re-drawn, pages
even full issues erased !
I later discovered in the original US comics more than
80 panels of your UXM, FF issue !!! Miller's DD were
butchered too...
Worst of all : your Alpha Flight issue with Vega's
past and the Big Lady was cut in half and we never
ever had access to your issues in the Monster's
world...nor UXM143 !!!         &nb sp;

Hm. Sounds like the French censors had decided American superhero comics were strictly kiddie fare and no evidence of the content was going to convince them otherwise.

The Brood Storyline was also heavily edited. Philippe I think JB will  not accept your chosen term "censored" for this ; this topic was often discussed on this very forum. It was a case of SELF-censorship performed by LUG publishing house to avoid problems.

You're right JB, LUG was allowed to publish stories for children and anything that was too "adult" looking, they decided to edit out to avoid problems. Sometimes just 1 or 2 panels, sometimes whole pages...

If Marvel did it to work they produced, it would indeed be self-censorship. However, LUG licensed, but did not create the material. What they did was censorship.

Nice to get a follow up on #143.  Was surprised at the time it was never followed up on (at least not that I can recall) - was that alien storyline mostly yours JB?  Loved it as a kid, back then I was the right age to dream of dating Kitty as I suspect many other 12-14 year old's did.  So a spotlight issue on her was perfect

Funny, just as we see many subplots resolve and clear out many more show up.  One would think you want us to keep reading this forever or something.

Hrm.  Peter's face in the final panel makes me think of someone else's style but I can't place it - not strongly (like the Adams panels) but lightly (small hints).  Frustrating, will probably come to me when I am out for a walk or something.

Here's a typical example of what they used to do...In the mid 80s when US comics became available, lots of us french readers switched to real US comics...

Just remember that Lug had real problems with french authorities with the first books they produced.

In 1969 Lug released Fantask #1 with the first french publishing of Fantastic Four, Amazing Spider-Man and Silver Surfer.

It didn't go well because the gouvernment made them stop with issue 7 because... the Thing was too frightening for children!

To avoid further interdiction they decided to censor the books themselves.

Edited: Sorry Philippe I missed your own explanation...

JB, have you found while doing ELSEWHEN that there are characters you really like and would like to use-- but they just aren't a good fit when set opposite the X-Men?

Or is the selection process by now largely subconscious, where only the "best matches" rise to the point of you considering them?
