Fortunately in Elsewhen we don't have to miss Guardian.  At least not yet.

I found myself thinking just yesterday about where the death of Guardian intersects the ELSEWHEN timeline—if at all.

In the sentinel storyline we saw some Alpha Flight action, which of course didn’t occur in the “real world”. Mac may have been deflected onto a different path.

Whatever the case, at this point he’s still got some years in him!

Cool - looking forward to whenever that subplot is picked up.

Jahf almost looks a bit menacing on that final panel - of course, zipping through space into Earths atmosphere would not do wonders for anyone's face I'd think.  Love that Gladiator doesn't try to stop him - part of his character to date has been extreme loyalty to his team first, then to the empire.  A guy you'd want on your side, but never against you.

So many possibilities with this series.  After all, technically Mr. Byrne has the entire Marvel Universe at his fingertips as of 1981 (roughly) so whatever flights of fancy he has can happen.  And all in the time period I was becoming a comic book fanatic (age 12 - isn't that when most of us became addicted to comic books) in large part thanks to Mr. Byrne himself, first on X-Men then Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight, etc.  Also helped me get over continuity (everything matters - find a way to shoehorn in every comic written from 1938 to today!) by his revitalization of Superman just when I was cutting him from my regular buying habits.  Now this for free, and even comments from the man himself?  What more could a fan ask for?

Did either of the names of Guardian or Vindicator have any cultural Canadian significance? Is that why they were switched? < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

Excellent! The possibilities alone make me very happy.

As Kurt Busiek put it, the golden age of comics is 12

When he was my fan character, Guardian was so named in reference to a verse in the Canadian National Anthem, “we stand on guard for thee”.*

When I brought the character to Marvel, the Powers That Were declared there were “too many Guardians” already, so he made his debut as “Weapon Alpha”. Around the Office it became terribly amusing to call him “Major Maple Leaf” (which, in the way of such things, eventually became the name of a different character).

Unable to come up with anything suitably Canadian and concerned Major Maple Leaf would stick, I let Chris name him, and he came up with “Vindicator”—which made no sense. What did Canada need to “vindicate”?

When Marvel coaxed me into doing an Alpha Flight** series, I made it a condition that I could restore the Guardian name.

—————

* Sung by many as “we stand on God”.

** Another Chris name I didn’t like.

Were you hesitant to do Alpha Flight
initially?

I hope Jahf is a long term addition to the family. I imagine an alien's perspective on the mission statement of the X-Men ("protecting a world that hates / fears them") would be...different?

I found myself thinking just yesterday about where the death of Guardian intersects the ELSEWHEN timeline—if at all.

************************************************************ ***************

I guess we all should have been considering this dilemma, after Mac's recent cameo appearance in 'Elsewhen'. The ending of Alpha Flight #12 was one of those rare comics moments, when you are faced with something so totally unexpected that it leaves you numb.

That cover and issue title was cause enough for concern - but the shockingly tragic ending (for me) is 'up there' with the death of Gwen Stacy. Sure, Vindicator may not have been in the same popularity league as Spidey, so the gravitas may not have been as widely felt - but for those of us invested in the series, it was a hugely impactful moment.

I look forward to seeing how fate pans out in 'Elsewhen'.
