The important distinction about Dr. Doom which some people don't seem to realize when comparing Magneto's modern portrayal to his more consistent portrayal, is that there really was very little revisionism done to Dr. Doom.
Within the first couple of years of the character's existence, Doom's creators, Lee and Kirby, introduced Latveria and established Doom as its monarch. He was also developed as having his own code of ethics and honor, even though he was certainly ruthless and did bad things to achieve his goals. Nearly all characters are not fully formed when they start out, but Doom's personality and backstory came fairly early on, and, more importantly, did not contradict anything we had already read about him before that point.
Magneto, as I've pointed out before, was characterized as a truly horrible person with no real honor for nearly two decades before the revelation about his past in a concentration camp, and the rehabilitation of his image. The changes with his character definitely and greatly contradicted his past portrayal through the years. A fan may prefer the earlier version, or prefer the later version, and that's fine, but it's a far stretch to consider that both versions are really the same character.
