This last page touches on something I talked about in a lecture I gave at a high school, long ago. I was talking about the "language" of comics, and how much we, the creators, depend on the audience to "play along".

At that time, I used the death scene in "Hero", in FANTASTIC FOUR, as my illustration. If the audience didn't come along for the ride, I said, and just read the sound effects of the heart monitor stopping as flat beeps on the page, there would be no emotional "oomph" to the page at all.

Same here. Read the multiple "Jean" balloons as just thud, thud, thud, and we got nothin'!!

Tremendous, impactful, appetite-whetting climax to this issue. Top drawer.

I am heartened by Xavier's "Jean?" in the last panel.

This entire issue has been a thrill ride!  Can't wait for next month!

...also happens to be my wife's birthday, so it better be good. ;)

So much émotion...likewise Jean's suicide page so
long ago for the then 13 myself.
You had this page in you for décades...what about
the last panel ? The story would be even more sad
without it. There...what a cliffhanger...again !!!

Awww... these 2 pages are especially touching.  Poor copy Jean and poor Scott... As I've said before, it's always good when we can finally see a bit of Scott's tightly guarded emotions show.  Fitting that most of the dialogue on the last page is just "Jean" (and two "Scotts")

I'd be a bit heartbroken if not for the last panel telling us there is more of Jean's story still to come.

I'm still holding back as much speculation as I can, but I do believe we have seen/been shown why exactly copy Jean would disappear? (Not sure it has been "revealed" yet, but it does seem apparent now..)

This page, this whole denouement, builds on a major, massive retcon in which I participated decades ago. If this was not the COPY of Jean this page—indeed, most of this story—would not even exist!

I have a dozen questions --- but for now, I'm just going to let that last scene reverberate.

Art.

Thanks.

Wow, so good! At every turn, not the story I was expecting. Kept me on the edge of my seat.
