The Surfer makes perfect sense here. He would absolutely investigate a cosmic event like this. He's even been foreshadowed in the original books. And it shows how useful having a telepath is in situations like this - chatting with Norrin during a cosmic firestorm is probably not the easiest thing!

Don’t think of the Surfer as a deus ex machina, peoples. This is still the X-Men’s story, and the denouement belongs to them!

That's good to hear... While I don't pretend to know what your plan for the Surfer is here, I must confess to kinda rooting for Dark Phoenix if they fight, simply so that the X-men get to shine.

Inking the electric eraser effects should be fairly easy. Get yourself some liquid mask, and paint over the white blobs. Then ink the black parts as you would normally, right over the mask. Erase the finished panel, and the mask will come off, leaving the “reverse krackle”.

Definitely have to try that- thank you for the tip.
Although, I have to say, I like the soft edges on this effect you've created. I wonder if I'd get the intended 'oomph' by giving the krackle hard edges.
Makes me understand the position of the readers who would prefer this project not to be inked...

Since we are discussing pencil techniques.....Mr. Byrne, since these pages are meant to be seen in pencil and finished art.....are you doing anything with the pencil that you wouldn’t “normally” do if these pages were heading of to an inker?
And additionally...are there pencil techniques/effects shown on these pages that some inkers you are familiar with wouldn’t get “right”?

The electric eraser technique might tax/annoy some inkers. Plus the white hi lights I’ve been employing would be meaningless if this was really meant to be inked. Inkers are a superstitious, cowardly lot—myself included—so there would be quite a range of reaction to pencils such as these.

JB, are there any pencillers you’d like to ink, but never have?
Do you actually ever see pencils strictly from a “boy, I’d like to ink
those!” point of view?

That, and historical, I'd say. I imagine that other artists have drawn a complete comic issue or 2 on the side at some point, never meaning them to be published. But over 14 of them???

It might be the best way to stay faithful to what you're doing here in pencil.

Wasn't that touched on just a tiny bit in Generations II and that one issue of Doom Patrol with a segment in the Generations universe? Obviously, Cap couldn't appear - but same backstory, same characters, no?

Eric- yup, it was referenced. But if this is fanfic, JB is free to do whatever he pleases. A DC/Marvel crossover is no different from a DC or Marvel piece of fan fiction.
