"As I said before, I love that Wolverine's not recovering instantly from Phoenix's attack."

---

It just occurred to me that since most metals do not tend to cool quickly unless submerged in water or otherwise specifically cooled, his skeleton is STILL roasting him internally even though Dark Phoenix stopped applying the heat already. Wolverine's healing abilities are only just barely keeping up with the damage this is continuously causing. (Where's Iceman when you need him??)

That is, if I'm interpreting the scene correctly....

I love these safe rooms. Such a great way to play off the constantly exploding mansion. The bit about blocking telepathic radiation made me think of Magneto's helmet. It's fun to muse that Charles would have picked up some tricks from his enemy and incorporate them in the X-defenses. (just speculation on my part, doesn't matter if it happened that way.)

JB draws the best Colossus. He actually feels like metal, not just a dude with chrome effects on his skin.

Wow. That is sick and twisted yet completely code-approved at the same time! Kudos to finding a new way to completely f-him up in a way that's never been done before. How long has this idea been percolating in your head for??

At this point I am very much letting the stories "write themselves," so, believe it or not, this bit of nastiness didn't occur to me until about a day before I drew it.

Working for a comicbook company, JB, did you have anything
like this "it just occurred to me" drawing freedom?

Jahf is asking the right question, but even if he and Cyclops can divine the answer, how can they overcome the terrifying awesome power of the Phoenix?

From time to time.

In fact--and this will surprise you!--I had annoying occasion happen a few years ago on just this point. Working on a particular series, I came to the end of an issue and realized there was a place for a humorous "punch line" which would wrap up the whole thing. Since it was the teeniest bit on the rude side, I called the editor and asked if I could do it. I was told I could.

A few years later, the same editor was busting my chops over something (no longer remember what) and he brought this up--but in his mind it had become that I had "written the whole story just so you could use that punchline."

I reminded him of the reality, and suggested he stop making telling that story.

Dark Jean Phoenix didn't kill Jahf. Or Wolverine. Or Professor Xavier,. Fascinating. Especially because Dark Lilandra Phoenix didn't hesitate to wipe out Impreial Center, or the Imperial Guard.

I wonder if, to use a bad metaphor, the Dark Phoenix is like an outfit that changes its form depending on the dressing dummy it's on.

And I reflect that it is so good to see my old friends, the X-Men! Mr. Byrne, maybe you hear it too often, but thanks for the great work! This is a definite high note in my day!

Back in the day, when he was letter column editor, Roger Stern used to moan about all the "Me am think you great!" letters that would come in. Letters that were clearly being written solely with the intent of getting published.

Here, of course, your "letters" are "published" automatically, so there's no need for sucking up. If you tell me you like the work, I assume you mean it--and there's no way I can hear that too often!

What was it Dr. McCoy once said? "I have found evil usually triumphs over good, unless good is VERY careful..."

I am thinking that the shell is very important.

Pretty awesome that, though not an "action cliffhanger" today, I still can't wait until the next panel with Scott and Jean :-)
