JB: I wonder if Chris would have done that, tho? One of my major
frustrations, working with him, was that he would so often write a scene
other than how I intended.

**

All we know is we will never know.

There was a time for the Byrne/Claremont X-Men.

This is not that.

I personally feel a heightened sense of danger without Chris Claremont
involved. One thing Chris evokes with his scripting (imho) is the sense of a
gentle, forgiving universe.

Not so much with JB.

@Mark

So given the weight of your last statement...how do you think Kitty will fare when we return to her scene?

Hm. Something Shooter used to say about Chris was that he never killed ciphers. He would always provide backstory that would make the least consequential deaths, well, consequential.

@ David -- I am in complete suspense with zero idea if Kitty has been hurt or
not.

@JB -- I agree with what you attribute to Jim Shooter here. Maybe it's an
inverted way of saying the same thing. For me, the particular charm that Chris
Claremont fills his stories with has the effect of making me feel that, even
though characters may die, it won't be the work of a cold and uncaring
universe.

The overall tone of your writing gives me a stronger impression that actual
death is closer and more menacing than I get from the work of Mr. Claremont.

One of the odd things about this project is how it evokes memories from my days in the trenches. When a book’s publication—and reader reaction—would come months after that job was finished.

You’re reading 13 as I work on 17. Seeds planted here are blossoming like crazy on the drawing board.

I think Phoenix is one of those villains who kinda has to defeat herself.  Kinda like Galactus.  You don’t really “beat him”.  You just convince him he has better options than snacking on your planet!

The combined might of the X-Men isn’t going to cut it if they decide to tackle her head on.  As we can see...she flings our heroes aside like tufts of cotton.

Seems like Storm was on the right track, but maybe the wrong person to do the job of appealing to whatever there is of Jean inside Phoenix.....

Time will tell.

By the way...
How’s Magneto doin’ these days?  Any plans on getting back to him?

Marvel should title series "My Way:" That way they could invite a creator to choose any of their titles at any point in time and do it 'their way'. So Walter Simonson on Thor (again), John Byrne on the X-MenNeal Adams on the Avengers etc.

I am currently re-reading Jack Kirby's KAMANDI and thinking just the opposite of this sentiment.

I would love to see an alternate reality where he had a strong editor and an amazing writer. Without direction, it felt like Kirby was just throwing creative ideas out left and right and not developing anything.

The expression on Jean's face when part of that house hit her....pure evil...reminds me of the Linda Blair in the Exorcist.
