To this day I can't wrap my mind around Shooter's issue with big shots of the villain on the last page.
Thinking back to my youth, those types of cliffhangers were the worst ( in a good way ) as I could not WAIT until the next issue to see the battle that was sure to come.

Shooter complained that such shots "turned the last page into an ad for the next issue." To which our collective response was "And that's bad, why?"

I wonder what his words were for X-MEN #111?
That Magneto cliffhanger page is one of your best!

I wonder what his words were for X-MEN #111?•• That was the first time I heard him complaining about the last page being turned into an ad. (Also, he didn't think the drawing itself was up to snuff.)

FUCKING WOW!!!
Looking at this realtime, it was over 42 years ago around the beginning of his stint as EiC.
But he gave us such good comics.... like his second Avengers run... Secret Wars... and Secret Wars II: Electric Boogaloo

I did NOT see that coming.
And here I thought the Sentinel stuff was intense.

The 'phasing' had been suitably foreshadowed for that ending not to come as a surprise. Still no idea why she's phasing though!

Still no idea why she's phasing though!•• If you are using that in the same way it's used to describe Kitty's power, then something entirely different is happening to Jean.

Ooohh, I have a thought as to what it might be!
You'll probably give me some left turns from what I'm thinking, but if I am right, I'll let you know.

We’re rapidly approaching a point I’ve been building up to almost from the start. My opportunities for zigging and zagging are shrinking fast.

Jean's body may be losing molecular cohesion and so, she may be in a ghost-like state similar to, for example, Kitty Pryde in X-Men vs Fantastic Four LS. So no bullets holes in her clothes because we don't see any blood!

I was just reconnecting with an old friend who, I realized, would love this series.
I explained what he hadn't known about the reasons Phoenix died, including Shooter's opinion that a Phoenix-labotomy wasn't enough of a punishment for her.
My friend's first reaction was that, to him, the lobotomy was worse than death.
Reading every page with Jean so far, I have to agree. It is really hard to see her like this. It's hard to imagine this kind of punishment catching on the way Phoenix's death seemed to start a trend of "killing characters off." Killing is kind of "cool." This is just horrible.
