Quite a bit gets mashed when going to the 600 pixel width.Fine details and lines loose definition. Here is a portion of a panel at closer to actual size.

I don’t visit this thread much, so excuse this comment being somewhat tardy. I just wanted to make complimentary noises about Darren Taylor’s inked panel from June 25th (which my iPhone is declining to let me cut and paste).Very Austinian. Bravo.

I agree JB. Darren’s got two posts here that had me want to pack it in! (Or revisit my approach at least).

Digitally. I’m using Procreate on the iPad. Still experimenting with it though, I’m not really happy with everything yet (it’s turning out to be harder than I expected to keep line weights appropriately different in size—I can get different weights, but not consistently and when I try to go back to an earlier weight, it’s often not quite right)

Bill, I was wondering. I'm familiar with Photoshop enough to suggest you look into Procreate's ability to create brushes. Perhaps some of your line weight troubles would be helped with a variety of brush types?

Eric,
I have zero knowledge of digital art programs. Are you saying that brush settings can allow for the varying line thickness of an actual brush?

Jeffrey, yes. I don't know about Procreate, but Photoshop allows you to modify and save the size, ink flow, bristles, bevel, etc. so that how you stroke the brush mimics actual brushes and their characteristics.

Yeah, I need to experiment with it. The brushes are pressure sensitive, so you get some variation just from pressure (and tilt), but the type of brush you start from makes a big difference and I just find it hard to keep consistency when zooming in and out.

I've been experimenting with using a Bamboo pen/tablet with photoshop to try and ink a page, but I'm having trouble getting the 'ink' to come out dark enough, despite having the brush set at 100% opacity. It almost comes out like a dry brush. Anyone have any suggestions on how to tweak this?

Peter, it could be how the stylus is configured or how the brush settings are configured. Here is a fairly comprehensive set up list: I doubt your layer is set to less than 100% opacity so my guess is a brush attribute. Since the Bamboo is pressure sensitive you might want to adjust the stylus settings.
