my first real exposure to Batman was in black and white hardcover "annuals" that were published in England when I was a lad---------------------------------------------- My first exposure to Batman was almost definitely the Adam West show -- or at least looking at slides from the Adam West film on a Viewfinder toy -- but my first real exposure to the comics version was also a B&W UK hardcover annual when I still but a mite.
This one was a reprint of a Denny O'Neil/Irv Novick story where the Joker poisons Batman with a chemical that causes him to laugh uncontrollably at horror and violence.
It introduced me to a classic mold of Batmans that DC was lucky to have portrayed by a remarkable succession of talented artists that includes Neil Adams, Irv Novick, Jim Aparo, Dick Giordano, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez... and also John Byrne.
