I've seen TRIO listed as being available in stores on both May 9th and May
16th. I hope that the former date is correct.

I wonder if some customers tomorrow will try to win their copies of TRIO #1 in a rock-paper-scissors battle with the LCS staff...

I usually buy the variants of every JB IDW book. That way my LCS will at least carry 10 copies. When I went in a few hours ago he had a large stack for sale. He said IDW offered Trio and the new wrightson Frankenstein as fully returnable to allow retailers to take a chance on the book without any risk. He ordered 30 copies to test the waters for the book. He had already sold a couple before I arrived. That is a big order for my LCS. He does maybe 50 Justice League (his current best seller). Hopefully this bodes well for other LCS across the country.

I was wondering why my little LCS had such a large stack of TRIO for sale.  I bought the standard issue and the variant (and he had one or two more on the wall).  I hope he'll have the other variants when they come out.

Paul -

But if this retailer "only" sells 20 will he consider it a failure that he didn't sell out?

I don't think he would look at it as a failure. But rather a measuring stick on how many to order next month. DC has had pretty good success with returnability on the early issues of the New 52. They allowed for the first 4 or 5 issues to be returnable. That way retailers found out solid numbers for a title instead of the usual slashing of orders month by month until there are no extras for the casual customer. I think if IDW follows that model (for new series) they could end up with a nice boost in sales. Anything that gets extra books in a LCS means more potential sales from people who are not aware a new JB book has come out. It doesn't matter if he returns the extras or not. It just means there is a better chance at the book getting a fair shake in this marketplace.
It's not perfect, but I think it is a nice compromise from publishers to retailers who run the risk of any book not selling. They are shooting in the dark for the right number sometimes it is too high, sometimes it is too low. This is a better than usual chance for new titles to succeed.

I only picked up the Variant cover yesterday, if I'm lucky I might be able to get the variant for issue 2 as well.
