Awesome pages, JB.  You packed so much story in those few scenes.

"Good old-fashion superhero book" is a great way to describe the book.  Also, looks like you address several off the questions I had about Paper.  The limitation you added to Rock's power is an interesting twist.

How long did it take you to come up w/ the concept and backstory for these characters?

That preview page is great: there's not only Byrne on there--but Berni Wrightson as well!  Glad I checked it out!

I have a question the variant covers.  Who usually keeps the page after publication, the guest inker or penciller?

When artwork return became policy, it was decided that one third of the pages should go to the inker. In the case of covers, this meant one in three. When an inked did only one or two covers with the same penciler, that meant the inker was basically out of luck.

So, in the case of these guest inkers, I'll just ask Jim Warden to make sure that when he sells the original art, half the money goes to the inkers.

••

Unfortunately, in today's market, that's exactly the kind of description that's likely to keep people AWAY from the book.

It seems JB always had a "Faithful 50(000)" who followed from title to title with great regard(Which felt MMM'ish for me).A "Good old-fashion superhero book" would seem to cement the faithful and encourage those who fell away, but still remember, to recomend  comics to others(civilians) that are interested to comics still geared to a new reader and good solid fun.

I officially added Trio to my pull list yesterday, and entirely skipped the preview.

Like Tim, I read the Next Men preview and subsequently regretted it. When I got that issue it took a moment for my brain to kick in that I hadn't read it already. It was only off-putting for maybe a second or two, but I told myself then I wouldn't read a preview for any future series by JB because I knew I'd likely be reading it anyway, so why spoil things?

I still applaud the concept of previews though. Back when Dark Horse started their first Conan ongoing, it was Cary Nord's previews of issue #2 (with the frost giants) that looked too good to pass up, and I added it to my pull list and have since become a big fan of Robert Howard. Likewise an interview with the writer of the upcoming X-O Manowar piqued my interest but what really sold me on trying it was, again, the preview pages of Cary Nord's art. Beautiful stuff, and I've never read anything with the character before so double plus to Valiant for attracting me over.

So while JB gets an automatic add from me, I know the preview - whatever may be on those pages - will get at least a few people to try it out who wouldn't have otherwise. I hope it's a hit!

I hope not, but I hear what you're saying.  Maybe the fact that pretty much all of the superhero comics out on the racks today are not of the "good old fashioned" persuasion is a factor in this?

Perhaps the fact that the average person who picks up a random issue of Green Lantern after their kid enjoyed the movie (it could happen) and finds multiple graphic dismemberments and 90% naked porn-posing Star Sapphires just decides right then and there to steer clear of superhero comics?

Maybe a book like Trio could do some good if it got the right amount of exposure?  Well....one can hope and dream, eh?

First the book has to get into the stores, tho. Which means we have to get past the wall of retailers who will tell paying customers "Byrne's stuff doesn't sell" (a self-fulfilling prophecy), or who are on a "crusade" against the Great Satan that is John Byrne, or who will order something "Hot" because, you know, a dollar made from a "Hot" book is somehow WORTH more than a dollar made elsewhere.

All valid points.  And sad to contemplate, sir.  Perhaps the digital availability will help get some more exposure?  No shop owner bias to confront there.  I know (well, I guess) you're not the biggest fan of the format, but it can get some eyes on your work that might later decide that they want some printed copies, etc.  Ah, well, here's hopin'.

JB - I can't remember if this has been asked, but is Trio going to be All-Ages?

(My definition of which will be something like your FF or Superman, where it worked on multiple levels but was still safe for an 8 year old to pick up).

Will you be doing any promotions like interviews on podcasts to get the word out?
