Nice to hear that you still are challenged and agonize over your craft JB. Passion that is sorely lacking from the industry these days. I guess that's why you have so many loyal followers....

That is just unbelievable. It amazes me that the big two won't do anything they can to get you back in the dance running major title(s). This reminds me of when I first saw Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein work. Just Wow !!!
link for those that haven't seen the above work.

A google image search for "Bernie Wrightson Frankenstein" reveals much more.

It's been a while since I read the DP storyline - this brought it all back in spades. Many thanks for posting this masterpiece and my heartfelt congratulations to the commissioner!

JB, can you post what the commissioner's request was, please? I just noticed you hadn't done it this time. Thanks!

As I said, Ryan, the request was self-evident -- reimagine the page, add tones.

I'm really having trouble putting into words just how much this one means to me. I think it has something to do with those X-MEN COMPENDIUM books - that was the first time I saw JB's pencils. I couldn't believe the depth and soul that the pencils had. I thought JB's work came alive on the page in the printed comic books, but those pencils were really something else.
So the grey tones in this piece really evoke this in a big way. JB has used these tones to wonderful effect in the all-pencil series ANGEL: BLOOD AND TRENCHES and also in STAR TREK: CREW. Check out the CREW trade and you will be treated to a very cool bonus feature -- all of the pencils for issue three without dialogue and color, so you can really take in the use of the grey tones for the art of a entire issue. Great stuff!
To revisit one of the most seminal cliffhangers in the X-MEN run using this technique is mind blowing. The style fits the moment, the character art is better than the original, and the panel use is pitch perfect.

It amazes me that the big two won't do anything they can to get you back in the dance running major title(s).•• There's not really anything they CAN do. In the end, it comes down to a matter of trust -- they've lost mine. I cannot imagine anything they could do to win it back.

Just as well. I'm pretty happy seeing your work at a company that let's you do what you do.

I have a jealousy bordering on hatred for the lucky person who owns this commission. ;-)

I NEED TO GET ANOTHER COMMISSION.
Is there a size limit for these grey tone commissions, JB?
I have an idea for a request.
