JB: These are loose "balloon figures" to start, and when they are all placed, I go back and tighten them up.

---

I can't picture those balloon figures being too loose -- or it seems it would be hard to keep track of who's who!

Interesting. Thanks for the answer.

You might be surprised by how little it takes.

When I do a drawing of Superman, for instance, all it takes is a quick "S" curve on the forehead to remind me who I'm drawing!

If I am really on my game, of course, even balloon figures will have some sense of characterization in their poses.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen the "half Phoenix/half Dark Phoenix" treatment...(??)

Interesting way to show both sides of the character in a single design/image.

...it would be neat to see that done with Marvel Girl and Phoenix.

A guy at work recently found this X-Men poster/commission online (the colored version -- I told him to check out the black&white on this site) and needless to say, he was truly impressed.

He is a big fan of Paul Smith, and said he'd love to see PS do a poster like this one.

I like Smith A LOT. I find his style very appealing. For some reason though, when I see his X-Men... they don't look like the X-Men to me.

Here's an example: Storm...

I don't know... Maybe I'm too picky...?

I ssee what you mean. Storm's face looks like one of the fish from Monty Python's Meaning of Life.

I never noticed JB parted her hair on the opposite side before.

Smith has his own unique style. I never had any problem identifying any of the characters as drawn by him..

The crazy thing about Paul's art was that he drew HIS version of the characters even when so doing was at odds with the point of the story. As when Scott and the others went googly when Madlyn Pryor showed up, but in the LCS the day the issue came out I looked at the Reveal on the last page and had NO idea she was supposed to look like Jean. Neither did anyone else in the shop. Different face, different hair style. I remember someone quipping "Maybe the guys just have a thing for redheads!"

And, of course, I have mentioned before looking over Dave Cockrum's shoulder as he examined the first batch of Smitty's pages, especially those with Storm. Turning to me he rumbled "Guess we were drawing her wrong."

Do you thnk that was necessarily a conscious decision more than just the way he draws, JB?

But, in my case, my first UXM issue was 172. Right in the middle of his run. So, when I see Madeline for the first time, I don't even know she's supposed to be a dead ringer for Jean. At that point the only thing I knew about Jean was the editor's notes in the gutters. In fact, that's what got me started on JB's run. Seeing all those references to those issues made me want them. Hell, made me HAVE to have them.
