But who gets to decide what to ignore, Rick?•• You slung "Rick" on the end, but that's really a general question -- and one I can answer. Who decides what to ignore? Same people as always decide what to ignore, and what to pay attention to: the writers and editors. During my time on FANTASTIC FOUR I made a conscious decision to ignore all references to Reed and Ben having been in WW2. On X-MEN I resolved (along with Roger Stern) that Xavier's time in Korean would get no mention. (Chris had, at that point, read only the Thomas/Adams issues, so this was not something he was even aware of.) These were elements that to some fans were absolutely vital parts of the characters -- as, for some, my reboot of Superman was ruined because I did not include Beppo the Supermonkey* -- yet the books sashayed along just fine without them. In the end, what is important is the whole canvas, not the individual strokes.
* No, I am not kidding.

I hope you get that call and I really hope if 'the call' does happen that you get those assurances and one day soon fans old and new will be allowed to check this series out.•• It occurred to me yesterday that there is an odd bit of synchronisity in this. My last issue, 143, was the "Christmas Issue". If all this could be made to happen right now, the new first issue could come out in January 2010, and be almost literally the "next issue". Again, purely a "thought experiment".

Y'know, this thread reminds me that no matter how much I *know* you had a multi-year stint with the X-Men, there's a part of me that still doesn't *realize* it. I came late to the party, having started to read comics in 1983, with Alpha Flight#1 being the second comic book I ever bought (X-Men#171 being the first. I guess I was one of the readers that the book gained while Paul Smith was the artist!). It probably took me about a year and half or so to discover that you also had a stint on the _other_ book I was reading, via a classmate's TPB of The Dark Phoenix Saga. But by that time, your art had developed significantly enough (for the better) that looking at the older work looked like a different artist to me (Terry being the inker played a role as well, I'm sure). Plus, I didn't *experience* the issues like someone reading it in '79 would have, as the legend of it had already built up by then. So, there's a small part of my brain that needs to be reminded that the writer/artist I became a fan of with Alpha Flight and beyond was the same guy that drew that significant X-Men run.
I know that sounds a bit crazy, but childhood impressions are the longest-lasting!

I hear you, Vinny! Even with all that came after, FF 5 is still the "best" in my eyes!

Several years ago, Christopher Priest wrote a short lived series for Marvel called The Crew. According to Priest, the decision to cancel the book was made before the first issue came out. Marvel even rejected Priest idea to promote the book (at no cost to Marvel) with a rap song that Priest and a rap group put together (Marvel later allowed the editor of Nextwave to put out a rock song to promote that book).
So JB, having ironclad assurance (I assume you mean an ironclad contract) is the way to go when dealing with the current Marvel regime.

I know that this book becoming a reality is incredibly unlikely . . . . but damnit the thought of it makes me giddy with excitement.
Hey Mike O'Brien, call in Obama.
America needs this comic book!

I really enjoyed The Crew and hadn't heard all the stuff you mentioned. I'd love to know more and I searched but all I am finding is this article Priest wrote before issue #1 came out.

Rick, can you point me towards where your information is from?

But who gets to decide what to ignore, Rick? What if what you decide to ignore is something that I and many others love? And why would we want to reset the clock to a point in time where Spider-Man, for example, wasn't screwed up, but then tell a different version of all the stories that screwed him up in the first place? That makes no sense to me.
Matt Reed, like JB said, it's up to the creators and editors to decide what to ignore. I have no problem with things that I liked being ignored. For example, I'm a huge fan of the stuff Larry Hama did with Wolverine's connection to Sabretooth, but I don't have a problem with all that stuff being retcnned or ignored.
And unless a story is totally harmful to a character (like Sins Past and The Other), that said story could be easily retold by leaving out the parts of the story that ruined the character. For example, a crappy story like One More Day could actually be retold and turned into a decent story by simply replacing Mephisto with the Beyonder (or some other powerful cosmic being). It's all about using hindsight and not repeating the same mistakes that other creators made.

<<Then I saw Claremont chime in favor it and Tom Brevoort in favor it and Ralph Machio in favor of it on the forums and I thought its really to good to be true.>
Just curious... WHERE are they chiming in on this issue? I know Ralph pretty well--just spoke to him yesterday-- and I find it hard to believe that he has "chimed in" on a forum.

Perhaps it was the OTHER Ralph, who wants to spend his Karate Kid money on a new JB X-Men comic?
