Just out of curiosity, would Jean be living or dead in X-Men Evermore? With the Jean in a cocoon scenario, you could go either way.•• This is a question I would normally answer with "Read the book and find out", but. . . ++ It felt really cool to type X-Men Evermore... •• Unfortunately, X-Me Nevermore is probably closer to the mark!

If X-Men Forever does actually turn out to be a huge hit and ends up consistently selling better then the 3 core X-Men books, the internet would indeed be cracked in half and the heads of many editors, creators, and fans would explode.
Another possible outcome if XMF ends up being a success, is that Marvel Might reset the continuity clock back on the entire MU to a time in each book or character's history before things either got screwed up or made more complicated. This might also lead to Marvel hiring more older and more reliable veteran creators (regardless of their "popularity" status) to work on their books.

I would hope at the least it makes Marvel look back at why
those older books are better and didn't need gimmicks etc
to increase sales, maybe they'll rethink their approach and
start treating the characters and their creators with more
respect instead of giving them to these new guys to be used
and abused to fit their vision.

It's highly debatable whether or not the point in time in which Claremont has returned to the X-Men with X-MEN FOREVER is better than what is being written today. I didn't like the X-Men much during that time at all and my level of involvement with that team and characters only decreased. Also, if we're talking about this specific point in time, X-MEN FOREVER picks up after the massive gimmick that was X-MEN 1 by Claremont and Lee. So I certainly wouldn't classify this venture as a period of time (1991) in which Marvel would want to look back at and emulate.

I don't know if Marvel would even want that success even if it were right in front of them. They so want to be a media company, not just a publisher of comic books. Which means creating events, putting out press releases, getting on the news, etc.

And maybe if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they'll
taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does.

Yeah, I think that's pretty pie in the sky thinking. That ship has already long set sail. They're approaching, if having not already, docked at the R&D pier.
