Maybe THAT's how all of the bad Byrne stories got started! The irony!

Jim Engle and Chuck Fiala lampooned my "rep" in their FANDOM CONFIDENTIAL collection, lo these many years ago. It was a fumetti, and I dressed up in a robe and a paper crown. Not a few reviewers applauded Jim and Chuck for "skewering" me, as if I was somehow not in on the gag.Yes, sometimes people just see what they want to see. Or else are just that stupid.

I remember that first panel on the airfield when Madeline introduced herself and asking...who the hell is that?

I really liked madeline back when she was introduced but the whole Inferno was strange, but now, Fraction is using her again and at least, he is doing fine.

The problem with that panel was twofold. First, and most obvious, Smitty made no attempt to make Madlyne look like Jean. Perhaps he was thinking I'm going to have to draw this face a hundred times or more. I will draw her how I would draw her and save myself a lot of worry and effort! If that was the case, can't say I blame him. But he might have done what I did, following Dave, and at least start by doing the best he could to copy the previous artists.* He could then have let his Madlyne "moprh" into what he wanted her to look like over several issues. Heck, even in the very next issue, once the setup was done with that last panel. This was also a case of Chris dropping the ball. Since Madlyne didn't look like Jean, and he was going to have to say she looked like Jean, he should have found a way to do so in that first panel. (This is almost certainly an example of what I have talked about before -- Chris had probably already done that scene in his head, so when it came to the scripting, he wrote something else.) Bottom line, tho, as I said, if you set up a situation in which the readers have to be told, not shown, then you'd better tell them as soon as possible.
*Fidelity to other artist's interpretation of the characters was not, in any event, very high on Paul's list of Things to Do. As many of you will recall, he immediately redesigned Storm, giving her pronounced Negroid features, instead of the feline features she had always had. I happened to be in the office one day when some of the pages came in, and found Dave Cockrum looking them over. I peeked over his shoulder, and found the page that had arrested his attention was one with Ororo. "All those years we were getting her wrong, I guess!" I said. "Yeah," Dave said. "Lucky he came along to fix it."As noted elsewhere, with Chris, since the sales went thru the roof following his arrival, it is hard to argue Paul was actually doing something wrong!

Re-reading it I'm going to blame both of them, they both
tried but fell short. Though I think it might have also
been a retcon because I'll admit I didn't realize Ms
Pryor was supposed to look identical to Jean until
told so in Inferno around issue #240 I thought they were
supposed to look similar but not identical until
then.

Check out the Paul Smith thread, there's a nice pic of
headshots of the X-men, the men are all spot on but the
women are all off

Look at all the other characters' reactions to seeing her. She's got to be pretty damn close to looking like Jean.
When she has all those holes in her history and Scott flat out asks her if she's Jean, that's a couple issues after she's introduced. It has to have been meant that she looked just like Jean. The art may not have said it, but the stories did.

All that was necessary was an extra balloon from Scott's dialogue whispering "...Jean?"
PS I'm glad that I'm not the only one who was confused with this scene when I first read it. It was bothersome, but at the time I shrugged it off thinking that eventually I'd catch up to speed. This was successful ONLY because I was an ongoing collector.

••
Look at their reactions with only that page to tell you what's
happening. Forget about everything you have learned since.
Should every redhead who shows up in an X-Book be assumed to be a twin
of Jean?

I just glad that Madelyne Pryor will be totally ignored in the NEW continuity established in JOHN BYRNE'S NEW 'X-MEN FOREVER AND EVER AND EVERMORE!
-And because it's a Marvel book, it's already behind schedule.

Larry, good point about Kang meeting past incarnations of himself. I guess the rules of time travel aren't set in stone the MU.
