Knut is right, John Buscema was using a much broader definition of swiping than the type done by Bob Kane, Rich Buckler, or Keith Giffen. There's no John Buscema comic I know of where you can say "this figure here is copied exactly from this earlier figure drawn by Kirby." Buscema may have at times imitated poses or panel layouts he'd seen in others' work, but he never copied them exactly to the point they look like tracings. I'm sure he was not recommending that kind of swiping.

What I think Buscema means is that when he (re)joined Marvel in 66 he was doing commercial illustration, I think, and at the time Stan Lee gave him several books from Kirby to "reintruduce" him to comics. So, in a way, he probably used Kirby's art as a template to regain the "groove" to draw comics. At least, I don't recall seing any swiped panel from Kirby in his work...

Er, I think I remember Buscema was given a Kirby laid out FF (?) issue to pencil, which he completely erased and started form scratch when he first took over the book. No way can I buy that Big John copied a single thing from Kirby.

Can someone own the Kirby or Adams style?
••
No. Which is often unfortunate.

I've read several places that the "Booster Cogburn" villain was based on some remark you made in an interview about you being "a cog in the machine" at Marvel. Though some would probably say that his red hair and superior physique were the REAL clues (insert smiley face here).
What is your opinion of the comic? Personally I found the combination of Gerber, Kirby and Alcala to be strange but good.
