Roger Ott wrote: I remember watching Letterman back when he was on NBC, and Dave making a comment about them having to bleep out the word "pissed" from a guest's discussion. Nowadays that word isn't even blinked at when heard on tv and radio.
I remember a later time when Letterman had gotten them to cleared "pissed" in the sense of "pissed off," but not any other version of the word. He took great delight in explaining this to Paul in detail:
Dave: "I just can't say it, Paul. i can say 'he's pissed off,' but can't say 'taking a >BLEEP<.'"
Back and forth for about five very funny minutes. They got some amusing mileage out of the verboten nature of "johnson" and "bite me."

In response to JB's "Tool, eh?"
I'd never heard the "eh" from a real person (that is, beyond the McKenzie Brothers and Puck) until hitting the mainland in 1995. Then I couldn't escape it and started saying it myself.
In Newfoundland it would be more of a, "What a tool he is," with the word "tool" seeming to have two or three extra "o"s in it.
Hey JB, have you ever been in Newfoundland?

But to say slang is a product of a 26 year old cable network
or that it's worse now than ever before is to be fairly out-of-touch
where language is concerned. =================================
Whenever someone holds MTV, as it stands today, up as a cultural prime mover I just kind of laugh. Years ago television in general made a move towards MTV style formatting to the degree that there are tons of channels doing things "MTV style." The only problem was, after inspring everybody towards a new paradigm, MTV neglected to keep adapting itself. So Now MTV is nearly indistinguishable from every other channel on the dial.
It still gets held up though, it seems, as some sort of cultural boogie man for old folks with an axe to grind. "Damn MTV and it's hippy hop musics..."

This weekend I was in a toy shop with my 7-year-old son up in Vancouver,
BC. They had a bunch of joke items, including "Realistic Cat Crap."
My son saw the package, which also had a drawing of a cat relieving itself
just in case people didn't clue in, and said as he laughed "Hey! Look at this,
'Realistic Cat...'"
He didn't finish the sentence because he didn't know the word, especially in
any sort of context. But he knows it now.

A distinction that's hard to get right
Is when to say shit and when shite
And many a chap
Will fall back on crap
Which is vulgar, evasive and trite
I have a prepared class lesson for my nervous breakdown (every teacher has a way out) which centres on the uses of the term 'fucking hell' which, I contend, is suitable for any imaginable circumstance...lost a million? Fucking hell... Found a million? Fuccking hell...Great looking girl? Ugly looking...etc It's all in the intonation...given this utility, the phrase will become absorbed wholly within the next decade, no-one batting a eye - after which time it will of course become redundant, having lost its shock value

I share the sentiment, Theodore.

As long as we don't get small "terrorist" enclaves entering stuff into the threads just to get them nuked. I mean even some of the more flamed threads mostly wasn't all flame. So, theoretically a select few could spoil things for a greet many. So... let's just hope the threat of nuclear winter works, and need not be put into effect.
Fantastic Big M&M Brother there, José. :)
Hugh Cherry wrote: "I think Joe's point is, there are a lot of newbies who do show up here as fans (vs trolls, or troublemakers), and are looked down on by a good sized portion of the membership here for the mere fact they are newbies, and when they do say something that goes against the majority, they get tagged a troll or troublemaker, usually with a sarcastic comment like 'from someone with such a large number of posts' tacked on to that. I've seen it happen quite a bit, as I'm sure others have too."
I know that I was accused of being a troll (or at least someone put up the question if I was) by somebody during my first month or so in here (over a year ago) on the grounds that I was holding strong contrary opinions on some matters. Thankfully, the board being what it is, a number of people stepped up in my defense and said that the contrary opinions seemed to be just that (i.e. contrary opinions) and that I had not shown any trollish behaviour in other posts I'd made. So all ended well there at least. :)
Al Cook wrote: "I'm also man enough to accept that how I refuse to let people disrespect me may have consequences."
Well, as far as I understand the new playing rules, you'd not be the only one suffering the consequences if the result'd be a fully nuked thread. I'm with you on the respect issue, but don't let the trolls win, Al!
Btw, lovely little rhyme, Ian. :)
O and a big thank you to Matt Reed and the Mod Squad in general for doing a good job in here.

I take it this thread explains the disapperance of the 'Spider-Man 3
Designs' thread then? Possibly THE most annoying thread I've ever read
(and I read the lot in one sitting- pity me).
Equally annoying is the fact that I'll never read those last two responses!
As for THIS thread- I'm with Hugh Cherry, Matt Linton and Joe Mayer. A
lot of newbies just get flak for no good reason at all. If this was literally
JB's house and we were all standing around talking in it, there's more than
a few posters I'd quite happily hit with some furniture. Heavy furniture.
Of course, if we were really all in JB's house, as opposed to sitting behind
keyboards with an abundant supply of sarcasm and bravery pills, certain
members of this forum wouldn't act like such cock-pouches in the first
place and there'd be no need for the throwing of furniture (heavy or
otherwise) at all.
A high post count doesn't give anyone the right to judge people as they
walk through the door- even if they're being contentious. I lurked for a
long time before I posted- and I still do more lurking than posting now.
So what? I'll post if I think I've really got something worth adding and
don't really expect to get called on my opinion just because my post
count isn't very high!
There's a lot of really cool and genuinely funny/interesting people in
here. Unfortunately, there's also a few who seem to THINK that they're
really, really cool- far cooler than they actually are- then there's a very
small few that, quite frankly, need hitting with the furniture.

So basically, you are VERY prepared for a festive event in your house, JB.
O what time was the party again? ;)
Edited because I write so fast that all the words can't keep up with me.

Knives, swords and guns seem a little bit too much. What about a chair leg?

You got a pool table, JB? Pool cues are awesome, not to mention billiard balls.
Another thing about this analogy though, is I doubt JB would tell his guests they weren't allowed to talk about certain topics in his house, or they'd be kicked out. Or shushed into silence if they started a conversation about certain movies, or whatnot. Or would they? As far as the forum goes though, it's totally JB's call. However, the list is getting kinda long, so I was wondering if a new paragraph with a list of forbidden topics shouldn't be added to the rules, just to cut down on the new threads from newbies.
