Jo;

Maybe I've taken too much inspiration from the title of this thread. It's
entirely possible that you were lightheartedly joking along with us and I
missed it completely, so pay no attention to this "Mr. Grumpy".

"But just to revert to the "Men are more visual" assertion I think that is a bit of a myth - Joakim is closer to the truth, men are just more easily aroused full stop.

And that suits me just fine."

Have I told you lately that I love you?  In a purely platonic sort of way, that is.

:D

i do not understand why ms harvert makes such comments about the men. all men ar epeople just like women are too and that does not mean they should be insulted. if mr byrne is attracted to marge simpsons then maybe some lesbians women are too. it does make sense if you think about it. now that i see it i can also say that marge is very nice to see and if i had a chance with her well you know what i would do!

Again, showing either your naivete, your lack of education in this subject, or
your stubbornness.

Glad your sense of humour is back online Al, yes I was only teasing.

I am very fond of men and did not intend to be demeaning.

By and large I believe all this "Women are from Venus Men are from B and Q" is a load of nonsense and that anatomical considerations aside most differences are cultural rather than innate.

However every now and then something will pull me up short and I think "Gosh! That must be strange!"

Twist the knife a bit more John why don't ye?

Naivete - possible although I am not totally lacking experience.

Lack of education - doubtful. I read some interesting research some years back that showed that both men and women were equally physiologically aroused by viewing sexual content, hence my assertion. I do try to be reasonably well informed.

Stubborness - You got me bang to rights Gov, I'll come along quietly.

Some studies on female visual arousal:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/06/030613075252.ht m

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/09/060930094145.ht m

Anecdotally, I know far too many women into Harry Potter fan art and yaoi to doubt that women can be as visually oriented as men.

What the first study suggests is that although women and men are the same in terms of the ability to be visually aroused, they do not give that arousal as much importance as men do when selecting a potential mate.

Thanks Michael, I am very good at remembering the gist of what I read but very bad at recalling sources.

I would say the latter paragraph is fairly accurate inasmuch as women tend tobe attracted more by the package deal (no pun intended)  rather than one specific aspect of a man.

However, if we are talking long term partner I would have thought men (once they are past adolescence) similarly adopt a more balanced (and less shallow)approach than just going on looks. Even short term actually because I can remember a girl I knew who ticked all the right boxes visually yet couldn't pull a rotten tooth out of a dead horses head.
