I agree. It is a great thing to have access to JB and be able to pick his mind every once in a while, but I don't think that I for one would hang around in here as much as I do if it weren't for all the friendly people in here.

Sometimes when we are talking about bad manners and fiery threads, I think it gets somewhat lost that this is one heck of a forum. I am not really a forum person – sure I enjoy a good banter as much as anyone, as my big mouth should indicate ;)  – but I am not a person who really jumps around on many fora. If there's somewhere I really enjoy myself, I do commit to that place, however, for better or worse.

And so far that rates one mailing list (a few years ago, much less active these days on account of an opened forum, which I haven't tended to visit much at all), a community (Swedish based, where a lot of my IRL friends hang, and from which I've gained quite a few IRL friends), and then there's here... where I've felt quite at home, even though I have contrary opinions every so often.
I just like the people! And I want you guys & gals to know that. :)
[I'll shut up now before I start getting really sappy, ok?]

Edited because while one would think a PhD Candidate in English Lit. can spell and such like, all evidence indicates otherwise. ;)

I want to know what Zaki Hasan thinks...

++++

Damn right!

****

See that? See that? Everybody knows that George
W. Bush is a conservative, on the right. Clearly,
this is an attack on conservatives in general, and
Bush in particular! "Damn" means to send to Hell!
And the only way you can go to Hell is if you're
dead!

Can we let this assault on everything America
stands for go unchallenged?!?!?!

There's plenty of other stuff to blab about besides Marvel's movies. Regarding Brett's point about community, I'm against any person who wants to alienate JB from his own board.

Sorry, but it's true - it's not all about JB.

********
If you want to be sorry about something, how about the fact that you obviously don't know where you are?  It IS all about JB and other topics are all incidental.  This is the John Byrne Forum.  I don't see any signs in the lobby saying come in and feel free to do what the hell you want and make it your own forum.  If you don't want to honor the man's wishes and not discuss certain topics, go make "friends" somewhere else.  You tried to get us to play your little points game and nobody bit.  Aww, too bad.  You don't get to take control of the board.  Now you try to suggest how JB should conduct his own forum surfing habits?  Go away.

I'm glad that JB voices his opinions here. If he comes on strongly and seems "grumpy" sometimes...so what? That's called being honest. When it comes to anyone with whom I choose to associate, whether in "real life" or on the internet, I would much rather have them speak their mind honestly and voice their real opinions than put on a fake smile or mince words. I'm here because I'm interested in JB's work and because I like that work enough to actually care what he thinks about many different topics. I've learned a lot here. Whether I agree or disagree with what he says, and whether or not it comes across as pleasant, is irrelevant. The only people who smile all the time are idiots and politicians.

Jesus, Wes...lighten up. I've been here as long as you, albeit in lurk mode for a long time. While I haven't contributed as much as others, I "know" (in a way) all of you. I like hearing your opinions. I like watching the discussions. I'm not trying to control anything...

And Joe, it's not about alienating anyone. That said, the result of banning the talk of something like a Spider-Man movie (which is completely within the realm of "about  or related or within spitting distance to JB") is that the community members begin to feel alienated, whether that's expressed online and or not, and whether you see it or not.

Is that in anyone's best interest? Is that good business? Is that good for JB's career?

What happens when someone new comes over, sees they can't talk about Spider-Man movies, and goes elsewhere to do so?  Here's what - they see none of the beautiful commissions, they see none of JB's wise analysis of the industry, and there's one less person interested in JB's work that could've been.

And why? Because JB couldn't stand to have people talking about Spider-Man movies. It's irrational, self destructive, and more than anything, a real shame.

Ditto, I've been around since GEnie back in '85, and BITNET in college.

I was on Compuserve and Prodigy. I had my own BBS. I played "Trade Wars" and my favorite BBS systems were Citadel and WWIV. I programmed a C64. :)
