It's in the ESSENTIALS volume.  Had to get these from the 'Net (my scanner isn't a flatbed)...

My Google-fu is weak, but I seem to recall a story that went something like this:

A merchant in ancient China hears tales of a great artist, and decides he must have a piece of work from said artist to show his contemporaries and gain prestige from the owning of it.  So, he contacts the master, and requests a drawing of a crane.  The price is substantial, but as the artist is a favourite of the Emperor himself, the merchant reluctantly agrees.

"Come back in one year, and you will have your drawing" says the master.

So, away goes the merchant, dreaming of the envy such a piece will create in his fellow merchants, perhaps even the emperor himself will want to come and see the piece!

Anyay, the year go past, and the merchant visits the artist expecting to take delivery of the piece.

"please wait" says the artist, as he sets up an easel and blank canvas.

The artist then draws his brush with quiet confidence across the canvas, and in a short while, a beautiful drawing of a crane appears.

The merchant is outraged "You are supposed to be a great artist, yet you mock me by doing this work in a few minutes! I will not be shamed like this! why should I pay you so much for so little?"

The artist looks at the merchant calmly, and walks quietly across his studio to an area curtained off from the rest.  He draws back the curtain, and reveals a thousand canvasses, all with drawings of cranes upon them...

The commision looks fantastic to me - they always do.  JB, do you draw a picture like the one here differently than you would if you knew it was going to be colored?  I always wonder about that, not being an artist myself.  I've always avioded the Essentials line of reprints because I think that the artists would have drawn the work differently if they thought it was going to be read in black and white, but I don't know if that has any basis in reality.

I've enjoyed many comics that were meant to be in black and white, like Sin City, Lone Wolf and Cub, and Eagle but the b&w reprint books always look so drab to me.

Even though I agree with the sentiment behind Wayne's post - it's not cool to make critical remarks in about someone's commision when you're lucky to see it at all, and I hope this doesn't get me on the @#$% list, this:

Oh, absolutely!

One of the advantages of color lies in the way it can be used to define form and depth. Neither of these aspects are available, obviously, in black and white, so the artist must find other ways to do this. (Same is true of black&white movies, which have to be lit quite differently from color, so as to ensure that edges and fields are properly defined.) This makes the job a little bit harder.

On the other hand, tho, in black&white the artist does not have to give any thought at all to overlapping colors -- red on red, blue on blue, etc -- so the job is made a little bit easier.
